My vote go to Tai Shan, I dont care if people (including Rush themself) dont like, I think its a great song!

As far as I am concerned, Hold Your Fire is perfect from start to finish...and Tai Shan is one fantastic song! I love it so much! Sure, High Water is my least favourite song, but I still think it closes the album perfectly. Hold Your Fire has now overtaken A Farewell To Kings as my favourite Rush album (although I will admit that not one song on this album reaches the dizzy heights of Xanadu!).

My favourite track? Second Nature comes to mind, but then so does Turn The Page and Mission...

It would be nice to have a critical discussion of the songs. Rather than interpreting "what is the best song" as " what is my favourite", I think it would be more interesting to actually try and choose the best song from the albums, based on songwriting, and how the songs are an important point in the bands career.

On HYF, I'd have to say that Mission is the best song. The opening verses really romanticize the concept of creating art and receiving inspiration in order to create that art, and the half time feel in the second verse is a really ice change of pace. Add to that the very Freewill-esque middle part, and the half time last verse, the structure is very well related to the emotional content of the lyrics.

I know, that explanation is kinda wordy, but sometimes it just gets boring writing again and again about which song is a favourite.

For, and to me, I chose "Mission". The songs "Force Ten", and "Second Nature" are close in second, and third from "Hold Your Fire".

Thanks for the bump, _hi_ and welcome to THE RUSH FORUM. I cried again when I clicked and saw the banner. Early morning. Thanks to whoever administers this forum. I don't think I ever saw mention of them before.

My fav'rite's still Open Secrets. I really dig Alex' intro and this hit me deeper than any previous lyric. It had a personal meaning to me at that very time and made me wonder about what it meant to Neil in that it seemed so revealing. I guess I shouldn't take for granted that he can also create and observe and not everything is a window into his soul. But I'm still curious, I hafta admit. Mission has grown on me a lot because of a guy covering Alex' guitar parts on the Yootoobs, which really hipped me to the brilliance of it. And Time Stand Still is bound to hit anyone where it counts - though not any cover version, every one of which saps the RUSH right out of it and leaves only the sap.
