Granted I don't know about a lot of these guys, but I do love Chris Squire, so I voted for him. smile.gif

My choice would be between Geddy and Chris Squire of Yes (played bass like a lead guitar, was the glue that held Yes together), but I must admit to not being familiar with most of the people on that list (and if they are more modern musicians, no offense, but I'm not interested in checking it out), so I'm by definition extremely biased towards the musicians I'm familiar with...

Ugh... I didn't like him with Metallica and I don't like him with Voivod.

Doug Wimbish from Living Color was good too - used a lot of cool effects.

I liked Wimbish a lot, but I prefer Muz Skillings, from their early days.

Doug Pinnick is a great bassist too.

How could Jaco not be on that list and why do I have to put him as other He is number 1 all the way. I also agree with whoever said that Tony Levin is a Genius.

How could you guys leave this guy out? Stu Hamm!!!

Are there bassists here who haven't heard of Michael Manring?

If you haven't, check out his website, www.manthing.com, and look at the concert schedule. Maybe he's playing near you.

A Manring concert is a spritual solo bass experience. It's mind blowing to watch him play this uber complex stuff and detune in the middle of the song. Actually, there are songs with like 50 tuning changes. On his latest album, Soliliquy, every song is in a different tuning. The man is incredible.

Gotta go with John Entwhistle of the Who. That bass solos on the live versions of 5:15 from 1994 and afterwards are amazing. Second is gotta be Chris Squire. Most melodic bass lines I can think of and his solo album is one of my favorite albums.

My favorite bassists are:

1. Geddy Lee

2. Michael Manring

3. John Entwistle

4. Chris Squire

5. Jaco (I know . . . after all these guys?? is what a lot of people say)

6. Ron Carter

7. John Glascock (kicks major ass in Tull on the SFTW-Heavy Horses-Bursting Out period)

8. Sir Paul (gotta give him credit for being AWESOME)

9. Tony Levin

10. Greg Lake

This is probably in the wrong order. Tomorrow I'll be saying, "WHY did I put John Entwistle before Chris Squire??"
