Who is/was the toughest man in Hollywood?

I put forward Rod Taylor...

Used to beat up Richard Harris regularly on the set of the Deadly Trackers. The director had to keep William Smith on longer than his small part allowed to break up the fights before Harris got hurt.

Beat up Jim Brown on the set of Dark of the Sun.

Broke three of William Smith's ribs in the fight scene in Darker Than Amber. Smith said he could hardly breathe and Taylor was still hitting him (the fight became real at some point) so he had to hit him over the head with a real bottle of whiskey to stop him.

They had another fight in the film The Oregon Trail, Charles Napier had to break that up.

Seeing the title from the front page threw me off a bit...

Me too...I was afraid to click...

I put forward Oliver Reed.

Not only was his liver a legend...they renamed the bar he last got drunk at where he arm wrestled (victoriously) some marines and went home and had a heart attack. He was in his 60s at the time.

Oliver Reed had his moments of madness both on and off screen. An infamous alcoholic, he gave directors, fellow actors and production crews a hard time. Although I don't think he actually went round beating people up behind the camera

Maybe not Jon Cryer tough, but tough enough to take out all but the most hardened roughneck.

Steve McQueen, a bona-fide psycho nutjob. Honorable mention: Robert Mitchum.

I read somewhere that Robert Ryan backed down a couple of would-be Hollywood tough guys like John Wayne.

Leo Gordon seems to have been a genuine tough guy.

Charles Bronson once had a run-in with William Smith, Smith just laughed and pointed out Bronson's height.

With all due respect, I'd have to reverse your choice...

...I thought Robert Mitchum before even reading throught this thread.

Think about the original "Fear Cape", "Midway" and "Night of the Hunter"alone.

I understand. I was thinking in real life rather than the roles they played.

As Jack says the thread is about movie tough guys who were also tough in reality.

The last two guys that Charles Bronson fought in Hard Times, Robert Tessier and Nick Dimitri were genuine tough guys, also stuntmen. Bronson broke Tessier's nose during their fight but that was just an accident with Bronson mistakenly kicking high with his left leg instead of his right.

I'd fight Steve McQueen way before Robert Mitchum.

I'd end up in hospital, of course...

...but, I'm fairly convinced it would be off to the bone yard to go up against Robert Mitchum.
