Tombstone Mountain
Next week in the mountains of TN I will be eating fresh morels once again—YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! You lucky shroomer. Snow is predicted here next week, so I'll have to be content with store-bought portabellas for a while.sad news...our little heat wave is over and snow is predicted here as well. Move my prediction up a couple of weeks.OK here we go again. we now have 4 days in a row over 50 degrees. Next week Morels will spring forth I checked some of the morel freak websites and people reported collecting them in TN about a week ago; it looks like your season is under way. I'm probably almost 600 miles to your north, so I still have a few weeks to go. Just today I saw dehydrated morels in the store for $20 an ounce (maybe it was only 1/2 ounce, I don't remember). Once reconstituted they may have amounted to 4 or 5 ounces, and I was tempted to buy them, but had second thoughts. I can wait!Man its freezing here again...this weekend should be fun. I've got pics to post soon. I must've foraged over 20 acres just to find those seven. Yep I've got it bad! You scoured 20 acres for 7 morels? You have got it bad. Once you find one it's difficult to stop. You keep thinking if you take a few more steps you might hit the mother lode!A friend of mine who's a chef helped me. I try to stay on top the very first appearance. Been keeping a log for a while now. What's interesting is that we've had only a handful of days where temps reached 45-50 degrees. They grow even in cold temps here...strange.Well the season is here...for all the newbies to foraging a tip—be sure that when you are into the forage that you look in small spaces. The morel can grow to be somewhat large, however that is the exception rather than the rule. So far I'm getting 2-3 inch morels and was reminded of how freaking elusive those bastards are. I'll be posting some pics soon!

April and May offer fine Morels. The best are late March dark caps. Excellent with Fettuccine Alfredo

There is or was a show about people trespassing on private property just to steal the stuff and getting paid cash for it. If you try to make money, be prepared to explain where you harvested and be able to point out on a map EXACTLY where you got it. Too much trouble for me, though in general i just love being in the woods and foraging for anything tasty--including turkey and deer!
