Gompers
"Hold Your Fire", or uncommonly known as "Neil Gets In Touch With His Non-Violent Side", was a real eye opener when I heard it all the way through. Especially with the song Mission, when I almost cringed listening at the opening, thinking "Holy shit! Geddy thinks he has a good voice." Lock and Key wasn't much better this way. A Rush fan friend of mine and I would joke about that. "He is trying to turn into 80's hair metal singer guy." This release brought the keys even more into the Rush sound. It really took me 2 years to start liking this release. In fact, even longer for the song Mission and that was because when I heard it on the tribute album from Magna Carta, I realized how much the drums at the end cranked. Nonetheless, here goes: The Great -Turn the Page The Good -Force Ten -Time Stand Still -Prime Mover -Mission -High Water The OK -Open Secrets -Lock and Key The Not So OK -Second Nature -Tai Shan (I have a love hate relationship with this though) This is 6.5 to 7, but I will go 7. Stormtron
6. I don't love it, but I like it well enough to give it the occasional spin. Tai Shan always gets the most hate, but Second Nature is worse to me. Luckily, the best song is after it. Prime Mover rules.
Powderfinger
A solid 5. Love Mission. Force Ten, Time Stand Still, and Turn the Page are pretty enjoyable. The rest I don't really have much enthusiasm for...
ReRushed
I rate it a very strong 8.

Rush Cocky
QUOTE (metaldad @ Apr 13 2012, 03:54 PM) 1 . For the one song i like . Lock and Key HYF is one album that aged poorly IMO. It's so synthy, I can't take it. If they played some of the songs heavier live, it could be salvagable.

Rick N. Backer
3. One of my least favorite albums by them. Maybe the least, actually.
savagegrace26
8 Force Ten, Open Secrets, and Prime Mover are the great tracks on this album for me. Like all the rest (including Tai Shan).
TheAccountant
First of all my thanks go out to Gompers for starting this series of threads. They are really helping me define my loves / likes (and few dislikes) of Rush's music. That being said, here goes: The Great Time Stand Still (the 3rd best song by Rush - yes you read that right, 3rd best, I love this song) Force 10 Lock and Key The Good Open Secrets 2nd Nature Prime Mover Mission Turn the Page Tai Shan The ok None The not so ok High Water The bad None Obviously I really like this album. A ton of very, very good songs that "fit" together well. Its a 9+ but I rounded down to a 9. A great album. Nuff said.
CrossedSignals
6. Same as I voted for RTB. A handful of absolutely classic Rush tunes, with a good amount of filler. Weak production.
Cyclonus X-1
At first I found this album's "loungy" sound pretty off-putting, but once I got accustomed to it, I realized that a lot of the songs are actually very good, the four best being Lock and Key, Time Stand Still, Mission, and Force Ten. There's some great bass playing on this record, particularly during Open Secrets. Second Nature has a nice hook, and the much-maligned Tai Shan and High Water seem to raise my spirits whenever I listen to them. I could live without Prime Mover, and I don't like Turn the Page, but I dig everything else. I'll give the album a strong 7.
Bastille Dave
I gave it a 6. I like it alot but don't love it. It's my least fave 80's Rush album, but I like it for what it is.

nappy2112
4 it rates at the very bottom for me , if it wasn't for Prime Mover it would be a 2. Now I lay me down in dream land.

Tommy Sawyer
2. 1 for Force 10, .5 for Time Stand Still, and .5 for Turn the Page. The worst Rush album, as far as musical direction. However, at least I prefer the songwriting to than on Rush and Signals, which rate lower than HYF overall.

The sentiment and lyrics get me everytime. "Freeze this moment...", gives me chills. Off to post in he MotS Nostalgia thread...
GUP1771
A solid 8. Hold Your Fire is a great album. Just because it's synth heavy doesn't mean there aren't awesome moments for the album. Excellent bass playing from Geddy, beautiful textures from Alex, and creative drumming from Neil. Also, the lyrics are very mature and powerful, especially compared to their early work. Lyrically one of the best albums. Favorites: Prime Mover, Fore Ten, Mission, Lock and Key, and Time Stand Still. The others I'm still working on, but overall it's a great album.
