Without looking at the voting first I gave it a 7. Low and behold the popular choice. I actually think Limbo is my least fav song on here. I think Totem is the Alien Shore of T4E. Middle of the road tracks that don't deserve as much hate as they get.

It somewhere between a 7 and an 8. Closer to a 7 however so I voted 7.

Has a couple of songs I really like (Resist and Carve Away the Stone), several that are good solid efforts that are enjoyable (T4E, Driven, 1/2 the World, The Color of Right, Time and Motion & Totem), two real dogs (Virtuality & Limbo) and the worst song in the entire Rush catalog (the ghastly Dog Years 062802puke_prv.gif )

Needless to say, the last 3 songs I mentioned don't get all that much airplay in my appartment.

It also interesting to note that the good, solid efforts started with the best one of them on the album first (T4E) and went down hill slowly after that, each one not being as good as the one before it.

Still, its a good album. If those 3 dogs were not on it I would have rated it as a 9. Even just removing Dog Years would jump the album to an 8+ (rounded down to an 8).

Time and Motion gives this release some good old fashion Rush punch.

I saw them on the second show of the T4E tour so I was fortunate enough to hear it live before they dropped it quickly from the set and never brought it back again. It sounded fine to me, not sure why they got rid of it so fast?

I gave it a 6. Some really great tunes (to me) but most are average. My favorites are the title tune, Totem, Driven (which seems kind of prophetic), The Color Of Right and Resist (though I do prefer the acoustic version). Limbo is my least favorite instrumental.

My guess would be that, after singing it several times, Geddy realized how horrible the vocal melodies are and didn't want to sing them anymore. tongue.gif

The only song on here that gets any play from me is Carve Away The Stone. Really catchy tune and great lyrics. 653.gif

I'm also a fan of any song with Geddy's "ooooooo"s smile.gif

It's also their best album-closer since "Available Light" on Presto.

I gave it a 7.

It's the only Rush album since Presto that I would actually want to listen to. I couldn't in good conscience give S&A or VT more than a zero, so for me it's the last decent Rush album. It doesn't stand comparison to Rush at their best. It wasn't a return to form, but it's a solid effort.

The title track and Totem especially are very good indeed.

This is pretty much how I feel, although I'd rate Vapor Trails and S&A higher than that.

I started out loving Test for Echo (thinking it was better than Counterparts), later began thinking it was crap, and have now begun to like it a lot again.

It's about a "7" for me now.

Half The World is a great song. I love it. No melody?? biggrin.gif It's ALL melody.

Strange but True Dept: the video actually made me like the song more. I always thought it was an alright song, but something about seeing the video years later.. something just clicked. It's a solid song.. very enjoyable smile.gif

It's a decent song...but I find it a bit too repetitive for my taste.

I like it...but don't find myself listening to it all that much.

I LOVE the solo in Half The World. The choice of mandola was perfect.

10 for me!!!

1) I'm a 90's Rush junkie in general.

2) It was the first record released after I became a MAJOR fan

3) The T4E tour was my first concert

But most of all... I LOVE the songs... Perfectly crafted, mid-90's modern Rock, with lighthearted (yet clever) lyrics that didn't try to be too brainy. It felt like a real contemporary record...

In other words, it's probably one of the most NORMAL sounding Rush records and perhaps too close to the mainstream Rock that was popular at the time.... I've always wagered that that was the big turnoff for some fans. The lyrics weren't "Professor Peart" enough and the music too straight forward.

Not suprising is that it's the one record (and maybe Counterparts) that a lot of non-Rush fans (that I know personally) can tolerate more than the stuff that we consider classics. I certainly can't fault anyone for taking a goofy song like Dog Years over an equally goofy song like Cygnus X-1 (joke goofy vs. sci fi goofy is still goofy whether anyone wants to admit it...but, we like what we like).

I dunno, when I hear Half The Word and Totem, I hear great songs that were potential hits... but, others within the community think along different lines. And that's totally fine.

I used to endlessly defend this album when i was active on these forums a decade ago... These days I just concentrate on my own personal enjoyment. And Test For Echo is one of my all time favs.

Alright, no melody is a stretch. biggrin.gif

It's just repetitive and annoying. It grates on my nerves.

Also Geddy's voice sounds odd on Test for Echo... it's too pinched.
