Hemispheres (way too long, too many repeated motifs, some incredible musical performances, but terribly adolescent lyrics) > 6 The Trees (adolescent lyrics again, much better music) > 7 Circumstances (lyrics pretty good, music needlessly clunky, in need of editing) > 6 La Villa Strangiato (ridiculously fantastic performances) > 10 ....so, my average for Hemispheres: (7.5, not quite an 8) places it a solid 7! Cyclonus X-1 Posted December 2, 2011 Share Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) Hemispheres - A rockin' epic that holds my attention all the way through, though I favor the early sections. Love Alex's guitar sound and the "I BRING" segments. Circumstances - An absolutely kick-ass rock song with an excellent soft breakdown. An essential. The Trees - Took me some time to accept the goofy lyrics, but the music is pretty sweet and produces an oddly (and appropriately) "foresty" atmosphere. La Villa - Very good, though not quite as high ranking in my book as some other Rush instrumentals, despite Lifeson's heroics. I listen to this disc a lot. Tony R Posted December 11, 2011 Share Posted December 11, 2011 I don't think that the title track has aged well at all so I'd give it an 8. Circumstances is relatively ordinary so I would assign a 6. The Trees and LVS are two of my favourite tracks by any band so I give them a resounding 10. The album is an overall 9 for me. 25 years ago I'd have given it a 10. It's a commitment to listen to any song >10 The Trees - Don't mention this song near me or my family ever again. Circumstances - Hell. Yeah. La Villa - A few dull parts, not nearly my favorite instrumental but oh don't worry, I'm not deaf, I know masterful guitar work when I hear it. A confident 7.
