You plan your Halloween marathon, you even get "House on Haunted Hill" in a new, shiny, 1080 version, but then comes Sunday night and you have to bring your wife and your mother to the movies... to see this:

...which is not really that bad, just your classic French comedy, well done. Unless you are afraid of French comedies, in that case this might even kill you.

I'll hopefully watch The Shining (1980) at some point within the next several hours.

Since turning 15+, it's the movie I've revisited the most. It's just the perfect horror movie, really. They even casted a bearable child actor! Honestly, the movie couldn't be better... Stephen King disliked it since Nicholson himself just seems crazy and the descent into insanity isn't as defined as it is in the book - but I see it as a necessary change. The movie also only captures about 30-40% of the frightening absurdity that the book does, but I believe that's a necessary change as well... I can justify these thoughts by referring to Stephen's train wreck TV special of The Shining which has a run time of over 3 1/2 hours for... What purpose? It wasn't good...

One last thing, this part of The Shining always gives me chills, I just love it:

I'm ashamed, but I watched A Serbian Film. Fast forwarded a whole bunch.

What compelled you?

Human nature. And now I feel somewhat less than...

I've shared my thoughts before, but I didn't find it disturbing largely because of the style it was directed in, it reminded me of an art house film at times. It's morally screwed - no doubt about that. I'd like to believe the directors and participants in these sorts of movies do so for reasons similar to curiosity as well, or at least for a cheap buck.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't think I'll ever watch it but it's always there in the back of my mind, the morbid curiosity...

On to a truly great movie. I can't praise this enough. It's the best "americana" movie I've seen in years.

Nicholas Cage is really badass in this, but the real star is the alcoholic father, not a professional actor but a real bum that died shortly after the movie was made... I swear, he's such a mean basterd son of a ... that I wanted to kill him so bad during all the movie. I really hated him. An unparalled performance.

Nice to see Cage actually restrained and in a decent movie for once instead of his usual, albeit, unintentionally hilarious typical yelling histrionics.

This isn't spam. I seriously watched it again this time with an objective point of view (ironically, this was screened in class today). Can't say if I liked it or not, but I do know that I felt no emotional attachment/investment/connection/etc. while watching it. It's definitely "shocking" but for me, as the movie goes on that shock value died on me and it became more of an effort on Jodorowsky's behalf to shock for the sake of being shocked. The ending was possibly the biggest "WTF just happened" moment I've had in recent memory while watching a movie, but that's "surrealism" for you.

Except for Shelley Duvall or whatever her name is. I'm always rooting for Jack.
