I was watching the not so funny Bill Murray latest The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, but what was good about it was the great Bowie songs they played. I have Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs also old greatest hits album. Liked to search deeper in catalog but don't know were to start. I know alot of his work is uneven and experimental,so any help on this would be appreciated! ( I HATE LETS DANCE ERA BOWIE ) smile.gif

Hunky Dory is a fav of mine

Earthling is another

The fun thing about Bowie is that he is always changing and keeping it fresh.

Well.............. since you already have his greatest album Ziggy Stardust, I will refer you to Station to Station (1976), which is a particular favorite of mine. Highlights are the title track, Golden Years, and that ode to cross-dressing, TVC15.

I also recommend Aladdin Sane (1973) and Diamond Dogs (1974).

*Edited cause I couldn't spell "Aladdin".

I agree with Dweez, Hunky Dory is probably my favorite too. Much more piano oriented than Ziggy etc. Yes BSG is right, get Aladdin Sane...most of his 70s stuff is worth having. I don't have Station to Station or Scary Monsters yet but those are supposed to be among his best.

I also recommend the "Berlin Trilogy," three albums he made with Brian Eno in Germany while he was trying to kick his cocaine habit. Those albums are called "Low," "Heroes," and "Lodger." They are the best of his "experimental" phase, and there are some great songs on all three.

I agree, most of his 80s stuff is crap. In the early 90s he made a concept album called Outside: The Nathan Alder Diaries (A Hyper Cycle) or something like that. Critics hate it, fans love it, and what I've heard sounds great. You might want to pick that one up.

I don't remember liking Earthling that much, but since so many people I know love it, maybe I should give it another listen.

His two most recent albums, 2002's Heathen and 2003's Reality, are also recommended.

You can't go wrong with any of the albums I've mentioned. This is one incredible artist you're about to get yourself into.

HUGE BOWIE FAN HERE!!!!!!!

I first saw him in 2004 (I'm young, dont yell at me) on the reality tour and was blown away. I knew who he was for years because as a child I used to watch Labrynth over and over, but never was all too familiar with his music. Outside of various Ziggy Stardust songs and some other radio songs. After the show though, I immediatly picked up Earthling. My collection of his is still small at the moment, only consisting of Hunky Dory, Low, Lodger, Scary Monsters (my favorite), Earthling, and Heathen, but I plan to continue adding.

LOVE Bowie biggrin.gif

Saw Bowie's Sound and Vision tour in the early 90s, great show. Recommend the box set if you can still find it. His stuff with Tin Machine is also very good.

And if you haven't seen the film Basquiat yet, Bowie does an uncanny Andy Warhol.
