Black Metal

I never got into much Black Metal. When I was younger I was more tuned into Trash, Death Metal, and some Grindcore. Now I just listen to a select number of those bands a few new ones here and there. I'm sure there are some cool bands out there I haven't heard.

Good Black Metal is great, as long ignore the ridiculous image and ideology and a portion of the lyrical content.

Went to see Shining & Watain yesterday which was great fun - Black Metal music works really well in a live atmosphere.

Burzum is excellent...can't go wrong with anything by him...

Well except for those keyboard-only albums he made while in prison.

They're ok but mostly dull.

Also enjoy the following: Bathory, Disssection, Emperor, Mayhem, and Ulver.

Some newer groups have been emerging with a black metal-inspired sound such as Wolves in the Throne Room and Kayo Dot, but I haven't heard much from as of yet.

I did a lot of interviews with BM bands, working for a mag, back in the day. That was ages ago. I always liked their use of different instuments but I was more of a death metal guy back then. 1022.gif

Great talking with you, once again, Earl. trink39.gif It is a tough sort of music to attach yourself to, but there are some gems worth listening to. The classical instuments inserted into BM bands enrich the sound and create an unforgetable mood and beat. comp26.gif ...sorry.

That's pretty awesome.

Would you mind sharing some info about the bands you interviewed?

I don't know for sure what Black Metal is...is Venom Black Metal? I like Venom a little. I have tons of metal here I never really tried yet in the iTunes library. Maybe it's black...but I can't tell. What am I looking for exactly?

Well, the rule is that if the band's lyrics involve the dark side, and glorifying the devil, that band is considered Black Metal. Musical sound makes no difference. That is why Venom and, let's say, Mayhem, are included in the same genre.

Black Metal typically has high pitched, shrieking vocals rather than Death Metal growls, pretty distorted guitars with a lot of tremolo picking, often with passages of clean arpeggios, fast drumming and lyrics about a whole load of things, from nature and fantasy to depression and paganism.

It's quite a loose term and most bands these days don't have all of the above traits. Most people wouldn't consider Venom black metal these days, either.

To make it more confusing there are lots of sub/fusion genres and a lot of bands prefer to label themselves 'extreme' rather than 'black'

Theres 'classic' black metal like early Ulver or Mayhem

You also get Blackened Death metal, like Akercocke and Behemoth, Blackened Thrash like Skeletonwitch,

Folk infused black metal like Primordial,

Viking Metal like Bathory

Experimental Black Metal like later Dodheimsgard or Shining (the Norwegian one)

Symphonic Black Metal such as Emperor or Chthonic

Atmospheric Black Metal like Negura Bunget or Wolves in the Throne Room

Blackened Doom like Tryptikon

Gothic Black Metal like Moonspell or Amorphis

and if you're an idiot, National Socialist Black Metal

At the end of the day genres aren't all too important, it's whether or not you enjoy the music

I dig some of it. Really like Emperor's first few albums, but I seem to favor stuff that has more of a black metal influence than just straight out black metal. Stuff like Toxic Holocaust, Skeletonwitch, newer Behemoth, Nachtmystium, etc. are some of my favorite modern bands. Ihsahn's last album was f'n awesome! Also really liked Burzum's "Belus" (haven't checked out the new one yet.)

Watain is good. They're a more straightforward BM band that I really like.

It is called Black Metal because of Venom so they are definitely considered black metal.

It's a difficult one - they don't really have any of the traits which one would describe as Black Metal these days, with the exception of the lyrical themes - the other 'first wave' bands have far more in common with what is traditionally seen as genre defining. They clearly had a lot of influence on the early black metal (and thrash) scene though, and one of their album titles brought about the name of the genre.

Its best not to bother thinking about it a great deal though, as it doesn't really matter. tongue.gif

Windir is one of the only good ones. hotdog.gif

If you like Windir you should check out Taake, Moonsorrow and Enslaved - I'm not massive on the first too, but there pretty similar. Enslaved are great, mind.
