I'll list several, and they may make the cut for their perfect voice, or they may make the cut for their power, or perhaps for their character. Regardless, all of these work well for me:

Polly Jean Harvey

Anja Huwe

Natalie Merchant

Joan Jett

Kate Pierson

Bjork Gudmundsdottir

Ani DiFranco

Ann Wilson

Debbie Harry

Stevie Nicks

Kim Deal

Texas Terri

Chrissie Hynde

Siouxsie Sioux

Suzanne Vega

Regina Spektor

Okay- I'm not close to done. I guess I should have trimmed further...

Tarja Turunnen (Nightwish)

Sabine Edelsbacher (Edenbridge)

Just to name a few.

Totally agree with Tarja. Glad to see Sabine of Edenbridge getting the respect due to her. Totally agree. She definitely on my list as well. My list would also include:

Grace Slick

Ann Wilson

Deborah Harry

Pat Benetar

Patty Smyth from Scandal

Floor from Nightwish

Doro

Carole King

Stevie Nicks

Lita Ford

Joan Jett

Carly Simon

Those are the ones that jump out anyway. With a little thought I am certain I could add more to my list.

Rhiannon Giddens.

A former member of the wonderful Carolina Chocolate Drops, she sings various styles

of traditional music, and inserts a history lesson into her concerts.

Despite being American, she can also sing in Gaelic

I love the Chocolate Drops, great people too- met them at a show once.

Had no idea about this at all.

Also Linda Ronstadt. Saw her twice and she filled the whole arena with her voice.

I love her on Toto's song Stay Away.

If you want a very creative, crazily passionate and open minded female rock singer with NO boundaries...try In This Moment. Maria Brink is a real hero for many.

I also recommend Within Temptation (try the album The Silent Force), and have you tried Dark Passion Play by Nightwish with Anette Olzon?

Buddy, I think based on your likes here these two albums are good choices for you!

I love love LOVE Lita Ford! My 3rd favorite artist/band after Rush and Queen! I saw her live this summer and it was sooo great! And Im happy that a few have mentioned her in this thread!

Oh and I also like the singer in the prog rock band called Magenta (dont remember her name). But she got a really good voice.
