Shirley
I did post this somewhere else on this forum back in December, but seeing as a tour is upon us, I thought I'd post it again. As you are all probably aware, attending concerts may lead to hearing loss. Well, back in December, I went to see a specialist about my ears. For about 3 years (since I have been attending gigs) I have had a deteriorating ear problem. When I finally got to see the specialist, I had hearing tests and examinations. I have a 30% loss in hearing in my left ear, and a 40% loss in my right ear. This is as a result of "Acoustic trauma" basically, going to concerts without the appropriate ear defences. I strongly recommend that people buy some good "music safe" ear plugs to wear to concerts. They don't get rid of the sound at all; they just bring down the volume slightly. My hearing loss is permanent and now I have to live with it for the rest of my life. Please don't let this happen to you, I am absolutely gutted as it will probably mean in a few years, I won't be able to go to concerts at all. Not to mention the fact that I am now partially deaf. Please don't learn the hard way. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, at time it is incredibly painful. Please be careful people. Please be careful people. Similar to mentioned above, I have been surprised lately has to how NOT loud Rush is in general. Maybe it's because I usually see them in outside venues... Mara
I've already got 40% loss in one ear due to trauma (repeated infections) in childhood. I don't need any more. Rush will be the only show I've attended since. . .Rush 2008. Still, I'm bad to listen to music very loud and I have never worn earplugs at shows. I may give that some thought this time around - I'm scared of getting tinnitus, for one thing. I know a couple of people who have it and it's hell. Solitudeix
I think shows sound better with earplugs anyway. Cuts out hissy high frequencies.

Godeater2112
One days worms will eat my ears, and then poop them out, and they will become soil again, rather like the soil I find in my ears. My ears are destined for dusthood. I think they deserve to at least be treated to some volumnesque Rush concerts before they expire.

Talk to someone with tinnitus - a constant ringing in the ears for which there is no reliable treatment - and you might feel differently. My grandmother has it (not from loud concerts, though) and some nights she cannot get to sleep because of it. Even though I'm not a habitual concert attendee, I'm really thinking about earplugs. Especially if I can score seats in the first 10 rows or so.

Since I always sit on Alex's side, they helped with those high pitched notes that really screech on the guitar(which really hurt my ears!)
MMCXII
earplugs. done. the thing about hearing loss is it creeps up on you... damage is done little by little over the years and rush concerts definately don't help!!
Del_Duio
QUOTE (proudlyrushian @ Apr 9 2010, 08:22 PM) QUOTE (hammerofthor @ Apr 9 2010, 07:19 PM) What? Rats. You beat me to it. Oh c'mon guys, I was thinking this too but that's kind of harsh to say to somebody who's actually lost some hearing and wants to help people out. And I remember when I saw Rush for the 2nd leg of S&A the 2nd set was WAY LOUDER than the 1st set and it didn't sound as good because of it. So they can still crank it. If a vacuum cleaner can damage your hearing after awhile I'm sure Alex's stacks or Geddy's chicken machines can do the same you know.

I am actually to the point of using closed caption on the TV when no one is around and I am only 38 years old. I have a permanent ringing in my ears as well. Your advice is good and I hope others take it. I failed to take this advice over the last 20 years or so and I regret it.
micgtr71
I have to agree. I wear the simple squishy ones and they work fine. Rush does play loud. I have seen the who and the Metallica and Rush is not far behind them. I agree. As I near 40, I will be protecting my already damaged ears.
