Going to concerts alone

Went to see RUSH on the CA tour alone and totally enjoyed myself. With nobody trying to get your attention, you can see everything going on, uninterrupted. :D

 

I did take a friend with me on the CA tour- it was my first Rush show since the Counterparts tour.

 

And as for l the friend that I brought with me, it was the first time we had seen Rush together since we were both 19. :)

 

But even if I had gone alone, I would have loved it just the same.

I've been to a few concerts solo and have no issues. I have no problem talking with people that I'm sitting next to.

 

A few reasons why I go solo:

 

There is a band I really want to see and I'll pay $$$$ for seats and my friends won't.

My friends have no interest or cannot make that date.

 

Yeah, It's better going with someone to a concert BUT ---- Time Waits for No One.

But, unless some friends ante-up for Alice In Chains tickets before July, and I don't think that'll happen, I'll have my first solo concert experience.

I've gone to a few shows alone - and I really enjoy it, in a way. I mean, I like sharing the experience of a concert with somebody - but inevitably there are the logistics and compromise that also tint the experience. Here's a quick story:

 

In March 1994, I made a last minute decision to go to a Rush concert solo in St. Pete, FL. I was able to score a great solo floor seat. the day before the show. Enjoyed the hell of the concert. After the show, I got my courage up to walk up to the stage and I called out to Larry Allen (Neil's drum tech) and asked him if he could snag a pair of sticks for me. After some persuasion ("I knew your name, man!") he walked up to Neil's kit and took these sticks right off it - sticks that were just used to play YYZ. One stick is even cracked! I walked out of the Thunderdome in disbelief, clutching these sticks...

This never would have happened if I had gone with others - I would not have "hung around" the stage long after others left, etc. So, yeah. it has its benefits!

I went to see Pearl Jam on their Vs. tour. It was a mid-week show, and no one else wanted to go. It was fantastic!

The first time I saw them, in 2010 with two buds, one of them was an original lineup purist who didn't want certain "Layne only" songs performed by DuVall. He was downright pissed and yelling when songs like Rooster came on. So I suppose that kind of distraction doesn't exist when alone!

There might be more, but I can recall going to at least four concerts by myself. The first was in high school, right after I got my license. I drove my fickle Ford Mustang 2.5 hours to Chicago. It was frightening, but also exhilarating. Panicking as the start time approached, I parked illegally in a laundromat lot and hoped my car would be there when I returned. I saw Dinosaur Jr. at the Riviera. They were my favorite band during my junior year of high school. I had a Dino Jr. t-shirt for each day of the week. l stood right up front and rocked out.

 

Years later I went to see the Black Crowes by myself on three occasions. The first was a 3.5 hour drive from MPLS to Fargo, into somewhat perilous weather. They played a favorite song I had long wanted to see. The next two occasions were in Chicago. I had a wonderful time, and on one occasion met some really cool friends.

 

In fact, these rank among my favorite concert experiences. Not unlike most of you, I'm sure, I've had a deep relationship with music since childhood, and it has been comforting in spite of its relative solitude. Going to a concert by myself didn't feel any different than going to a record store or listening to an album by myself. Quite nice.

As a youngster back in the 70's, my friends were strictly "Rock" fans, so I saw a few acts on my own.

 

One that stands out was Kraftwerk back in 75.

I quite often go to concerts on my own as my family and friends don't really share my taste in music. Sometimes I can get my husband or my youngest son to come with me but if no-one else wants to see a band that I really want to see, I'll go on my own.

I've probably seen 300 shows in small venues like night clubs and dance halls in Chicago and I probably saw a third of those solo. When I lived in Lakeview, I was in walking, stumbling or cab distance to so many places.

 

Acts seen solo Stabbing Westward, Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Pegboy, Fugazi, Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus Lizard, Spies Who Surf, Terminal White, Bhopal Stiffs,Urge Overkill and so many more I have spaced out.

 

Going to an arena show solo would be a bit different and I would probably not have seen as many shows if I had to drive, like I do for the United Center, Rosemont and all the other places in Chicago and SE Wisconsin.

 

It was nice just throwing on a pair of boots and heading out. It's a pain and a process getting into an arena, especially now days.

I always went with other people when I was younger. Now that I'm older I'll go to any concert alone if it's something I want to see. Life is too short to not do something just because you can't find someone else to go with you.

That's it... my wife and I have severely different taste in music, and she's a hindrance if it's a band I want to see and I "make" her come along (her words) so I just go by myself...if it's a show in Hershey, and she's around, I'll have her drop me off and pick me up since it's ridiculous what you have to pay to park over there! (and there are some back ways that the "tourists" don't really know, so it gets me home and out of the traffic!)

 

What IS cool is that there's a guy she works with that is a concert going freak, and since his wife has pretty much the same taste in music as mine (i.e. nothing good) we've been hitting those types of shows a lot lately....AND he knows his way around the Philly area so shows at the Tower and places like the Keswick aren't out of the question.

I've actually only been there once...and his one daughter went to school at Villanova, so he knows that area fairly well... it's a nice ares from what I saw...same with the Keswick's neighborhood.

I go to concerts alone......i dont mind. Works out good if you have nice people around you that really are there for the show.

I almost exclusively go to concerts alone. The only time I've ever had to go to shows with someone else was when my older sister would go see shows and I'd be there with her just to make sure she's safe, etc. Every once in awhile, my college friend, Nick and I coincidentally go to the same shows since we have quite common taste as far as newer music we listen to so we'd chill in the same area for a show. The only reason why I'm there is for the music and to enjoy seeing the band live. Any sort of interaction with fellow fans and in the rare cases, the bands themselves is more like a bonus really.

There's always someone in the line or in the crowd talking to me before concert starts.

I go wherever I wanna go, talk to whoever I feel like talking and watch bands, enjoying as most as possible. :cheers:

I don't think I ever attended a concert without someone accompanying me. Would be strange to be alone in that environment.

I have been alone at bars before where there was music. But that was not the norm.

It's about 50-50 for me. I'm good either way although there are some bands I would enjoy the shared experience more.

If it's good for the soul, it's good for the soul so not going because someone else isn't is not an option.

I can find friends to go to see established acts like rush or steely dan. I was surprised no one would go the megadeth show i saw on monday night.

 

I am 43 and most of my friends are not into newer music but I feel that the best shows come from up and coming groups in small venues. Porcupine Tree- Fear of a blank planet tour.

Mastodon- Crack The Skye

 

I also went solo the one time I saw Buckethead and I count that as one of the best shows i have ever seen.

 

Those three tours were the shit!!

Even think twice about it. I am there. :codger: I went to see Rush last July in Portland Oregon. Met up with some folks here but we sat in different areas of the arena.
