I wonder how everyone feels now...

Ever since Crosby started playing in the NHL, hockey fans seem to despise him. Well most of the hockey fans I talk to anyway.

Stuff like this Crosby hate group on facebook.

So if you hated him before, did his gold medal winning goal in overtime change your opinion of him at all? Even if you still hate him, you have to give him props for the game winner today dotcha think? http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/yes.gif

Since you say that people hate Sidney Crosby, I assume you are talking about Canadians.  People here in the States barely know who he is.  I think he is awesome.

Yep I'm talking about Canadians. I moved back to Canada before he started in the NHL. So I haven't had much discussion with Americans about him.

As for people in the States not knowing who he is, I think that's probably not true. First of all, he's one the best NHL'ers in the league. Not to mention he's plays for an American Team, that are the current Stanley Cup champions. Maybe not to everyone, but I'm sure if you ask any real hockey fan if they've heard of Crosby they would say yes.

I'd also bet that most of the 2 million plus Pittsburgh residents know the captain of their hockey team. As well as the 4 million plus people that live in Detroit.

ovechkin is the most exciting player to watch. all you need to do is lay a finger on crosby and he goes down. he's still young and going through the crybaby phase but lets hope he doesn't turn out to be a bigger crybaby than gretzky.

I've always loved Crosby. Penguins are my team and he's awesome! I'm so proud of him right now! http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

All the hate that exists for him is just because they are bitter. I'm willing to bet you that if he was on their team they wouldn't be saying he sucks.

Are you sure there's that many people left in Detroit? http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif I don't hate Crosby. I hated the media attention he got even before he started playing in the NHL. It reminded me of the Lindros craziness back in the day. Now that he has a Stanley Cup and a gold medal in the olympics, the critics must stay quiet. You must admit however, he didn't have a star-type tournament.

Al Michaels on NBC referred to him as "the 21st century Wayne Gretzky". Is this comparison getting tossed around a lot? I'm just a casual hockey fan, but even to me this seems a form of blasphemy.

He's only 22 years old and he's already won Olympic Gold, World Juniors, and the Stanley Cup. Eventhough it's a lil early to making comparisons to people like Gretzky or Lemieux... I think he may be on his way. I just hope he doesn't get bored of the sport soon... he's kinda done it all already and he's not even 23 yet.

I am generally talking about non sports fans. Most sports fans down here have a vague knowledge of him in the sense that they know that there is a guy named Sidney Crosby that plays hockey. Most big sports fans probably know that he plays for the Penguins. Of all the people I know, I know one guy who knows enough about hockey to have an opinion of him.

The general public, meaning non sports fans, knows that Tiger Woods plays golf, Brett Favre plays football, Kobe and LeBron play basketball but doesn't know the name Sidney Crosby at all. Its frustrating being looked at funny when I say that I love hockey.

I hate his guts even more now than I did before. All we will here is how he lead Canada to a gold metal while in reality he was transparent throughout with the exception of that last goal which was a layup anyway.

He is over rated and I am sick of all the slurping he gets from the media and the league. http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/rage.gif

but at the age of 22 Gretzky already had a 212 pt season. Crosby will never do that. To put him in the same sentence as Gretzky is just stupid.

They have also changed the rules of the game DRASTICALLY ever since the days of back when Gretzky was 22 years old. NOBODY will ever get those points again.. not even Ovie.. sorry Testy.

Gretzky also was a puss when it came to physical play and always had a "body guard" on standby on his line, whereas Crosby has learned to become more of a physical player and take his knocks. In terms of the style of play that Crosby plays.. I'd say he's more compariable to that of Lemieux because he is not just a shooter, he is a play maker, which makes a lot of sense considering who he trains with.

A lot of the hate he gets is because a lot of people don't see him as deserving to be a captain yet.. but you know he has proven to be a very good captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins during his time served as Capt. He is the heart of the team, he keeps everyone going, sets up shots for other team members rather than just hogging the glory for himself. He still one of the top scorers this season in the NHL, same with last season.

Last time I checked there was a person on Pitt by the name of Eric Godard dropping the gloves for those taking liberties with Sid. Before that George Laraque had the duties and did a shitty job.

To say Sid doesn't have someone giving him a little protection is not accurate. There are lots of non physical players in the NHL that are there to put the puck in the net.

Semenko wasn't a staple on Gretzky's line. He played on it for a short time but those on the ice knew if they were being stupid payback would be coming their way.

You can add three to the growing list of Crosby fans in the U.S. - my wife, my daughter and my daughter's friend.

They kept asking questions about him while we watched the men's final. The friend said she thinks Crosby has pretty lips. I had no reply for that comment.

That about sums up how I feel about Sid. He's a hell of a hockey player, but the media has kind of forced him down our throats. That's not really his fault though.

And if a certain team from Chicago wins the cup, there will be another young forward who will have won the cup and a gold medal by age 22.

My man Johnny (not Sid) was named best forward of the Olympics. http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/1022.gif

I'm Canadian...and I still don't care for Crosby.

Again...it's not a question of talent. But the (Canadian) media continuing to shove him down our throats is plain ridiculous.

I remember when Crosby was first making the playoffs, and many media outlets were comparing him to Mario, and how he was making his playoff debut a few years before Lemieux, and therefore was better already. Yet, they were failing to leave out the fact that Lemieux had absolute GARBAGE on his team those first few years with the Pens...certainly nothing compared to what Crosby has had on his (remember, he's not even the best Pen; MALKIN is).

Plus, even on last night's broadcast, it could've been any other player getting the game winner last night, and they still would continue to have the cameras fixated on him all throughout the celebrations afterwards.

He is a great player? Yes, definitely. He has done some magnificant things at a young age already. But let the kid get through more of his career before you start making these absurd comparisons about him being a Gretzky or Lemieux. He is FAR off from that yet.

I don't neccessarily hate him as a person or anything. It's just that is the face of our hated rival that is all. I also agree with the whole media shoving him in our faces all the time....just like Gretzky. Just liking him just because he is Canadian is stupid. Life is too short worrying where someone is from.

Hey I was cheering my ass off like every other Canadian last night when Sid scored. http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/1022.gif

I would never think Ovie or Sid would ever score the amount of points Gretz did. Probably no one will ever touch that record. I do however think someday Ovie has a shot at Gretzky's goals in a season record; or even career goals. He is still pretty young too.
