I think it's overrated. In my opinion, Permanent Waves is better - it's got two extended numbers - "Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science" - that don't repeat the same themes over and over (see "The Camera Eye"), two pop-accessible songs ("The Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill", which are still played today on radio), and two love-tinged songs ("Different Strings" and "Entre Nous", the latter of which could also pass as a single, and was played on radio IIRC).

I won't say that Moving Pictures is a bad album, or a mediocre album - I just happen to think there are other albums better than it (Permanent Waves, Power Windows, Counterparts), and I simply believe it is overrated. The same applies for Yes' Close To The Edge - it's one of the best Yes albums and one of my favorites, but I think it's overrated, and I prefer Relayer, Fragile, and 90125 to it.

Honestly, is this even the right question?

People can EASILY think the album is overrated and still think it's a very good or even fantastic album. All this means is that someone thinks maybe it's been too blown out of proportion, thought of too highly against other Rush albums that they think of as good or better or that maybe it's too over-exposed.

The question I originally posed in the other thread was how many people out there thought MP was a bad album or just average. I think those figures would be even more skewed, as I would imagine precious few Rush fans think the album is bad or even average...

There are not many albums that I would call "perfect", but for me Moving Pictures definitely falls in that category.

Agreed.

Also:

Beethoven's 9th Symphony

A Love Supreme

Dark Side of the Moon

There are others, but these - I think - are completely undebatable.

I can see liking Permanent Waves better than MP, but Counterparts?? There isnt a track on CP that stacks up against Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ or Limelight. no.gif

Not at all. Let's swap S&A with MP timewise. We would all shit bricks if Moving Pictures came out in '07.

Yep! I'd be going nuts for MP if it had just been released.

And I would've been bumming after Permanent Waves. tongue.gif

I agree with this, and I happen to LOVE Counterparts.

Side one of Moving Pictures is "ABSOLUTE PERFECTION." The best album side of all time IMHO. yes.gif

BTW...easiest poll of all-time. Seriously.

I'll give you 7 reasons why MP is certainly NOT overrated:

1) Tom Sawyer

2) Red Barchetta

3) YYZ

4) Limelight

5) The Camera Eye

6) Witch Hunt

7) Vital Signs

That should be all you need to realize why it's not overrated. 1022.gif

I would probably say there's an argument for Side 2 of MP being overrated. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Camera Eye (kinda boring), or Witch Hunt...I like Vital Signs, but not a ton.

I would maintain that Hemispheres and Permanent Waves are more complete albums from Song 1 to the last minute.

BUT, that being said, Side 1 of Moving Pictures is absolute perfection.

I mean Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight...that's just freakin' ridiculous 20 minutes!

Purely as a fan on the basis of my own personal rankings it isn't my favorite, but if aliens landed and asked me to give them one album that completely sums up what Rush is about, there's really no other answer.

That should answer the question well enough.

Tru dat.

I can't think of 4 songs off of one album that have gotten more concert play.

Dude, it was like $20 or $25 off ebay when I got it.

I used to have tons of Rush posters as a teen, but got rid of them years ago.
