I just have a quick question.
Is Mark Knopfler influenced by Jerry Garcia?

I don't think so. I think Mark was influenced by Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore and Hank Marvin.

Hey Arrow!

I love Chet Atkins. I'm really not into the country thing but I do have that Knopfler/Atkins cd.

Don't forget Chet with Les Paul and Chet with Jimmy Reed.

Those cds are in print from Japan!

They are fantastic!!!

Earl

Yeah Chet's a fantastic player, he influenced so many people...

Check this video out:

Mark Knopfler & Chet Atkins/ YouTube

Scotty Moore (who played guitar for Elvis in the fifties) was also influenced by Chet Atkins, and Scotty himself became a big influence on many guitar players, including Mark Knopfler.

My dad was/is a big Chet Atkins fan. Hance, I grew up listening to a lot of his stuff. It's likely a reason that I'm such a fan of Dire Straits.

Chet has great tone, which is what interests me most from a player. Wankery ala VanHalen, Satriani, Vai, not so much.

For me I gotta go with Making Movies. While flawed its an easy 4/5 rating.

I'm not too keen on the production. I like the crisper sound.

It works for these songs, though (kind of like Signals).

LOVE OVER GOLD!!!!!!!

Humans HATE Dire Straits!

I think Mark and his brother stood up the Cock And Roll Hall Of Fame! OH WELL!

"Love Over Gold" is one of the greatest albums on the Earth!!!

Yes ReRushed, "Brothers In Arms" is an MTV boring record, but did you know it was the first cd pressed for America? 1985!

I bought it at Tower in Concord even before I had a cd player!

My next cd was Moving Pictures then Ratt Out Of The Cellar! Insane I remember this!

The rest is history! Now cds are becoming obsolete. Only in the Millennial USA! BEAT IT!

Praise Japan and Europe!!!

There are 85 TOWER locations in Japan.

I can't wait to go! Better get a black AM EX CARD! LOL!!!!

What irony. "LOVE OVER A 24 KARAT GOLD CD?"

Mmmmmmmmm

Fuckkk love. Been there done that.

First time marry for love. Second time marry for money!!!

Jesus! I wrote this in 2009??

Ironically I was happily married back then.

Time flies.

Humans lie.

I sigh.

I try.

Love is a battle cry.

Hate is a cherry pie.

Heartbreak can make you die.

High N Dry

Spaced Dyed Vest

Never invest in love.

Now you know what they say about beggars

You can't complain about the rules

You know what they say about beggars

You know who's the first to blame his tools

You never gave a damn about who you pick up

And leave lying bleeding on the ground

You screw people over on the way up

Because you thought that you were never coming down

And he takes you out in vaudeville valley

With his hand up smothering your screams

And he screws you down in tin pan alley

In the city of a billion dreams...

I love their early stuff in general but Making Movies has always been my favorite, esp love that first side: Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway.
