RUSHHEAD666
Thanks to Goose mentioning the great Mark Knopfler in the Neil Young thread I figured that it would be nice to give Mark some love. Dire Straits is fantastic yet I know a few people who can't stand this band for some reason. If you hate this group please tell me why? My favorite album is: "LOVE OVER GOLD" I could play that record all day long and it will never get old! Hey that rhymed! LOL!
goose
Wow, a dedicated thread! Knopfler is indeed a lyrical genius, and he has one of the most unique guitar tones around. Love Over Gold is fantastic. It's so different from Making Movies, which preceded it. Both of those have great songs on them. And of course, Brothers in Arms followed those two. How many bands have three albums in a row that are just about perfect? On Every Street is another awesome collection of songs. It really shows Mark's versatility as a songwriter. I could go on and on about this guy.
RUSHHEAD666
Goose! That was the tour I saw! ON EVERY STREET! I had second row!!!! It was incredible!!! Oh and I agree with you on the TFE thread. I love TIME AND MOTION!!! "Sultans Of Swing" may be like the Dire Straits version of "Tom Sawyer" but the guitar solo on that song is just ripping. It never gets old. Actually I would take "S.O.S." over "Tom Sawyer" any day. Enough is enough. PUN INTENDED! Rush needs to "SAVE OUR SONG" and put TOM SAWYER on the shelf for the next tour. Rush Cocky
Brothers in Arms is a surprisingly great album. My college roommate used to play it nonstop, so I got to experience some great music. Being a hard rocker at the time, I didn't like it at all at first, but when you give it a chance, it really grows on you.

JMO Sultans is a song I still love every tie I hear it. Tom Sawyer, not as much, especially, as you say, live. But to hang it up would be impossible, and would confuse the hell out of a lot of people. Second row? Awesome! How was the setlist for that tour? RushCocky mentioned Straits songs being "growers". One from OES that has really grown on me is Planet of New Orleans. Was that on the setlist? Edited June 17, 2009 by goose

Tinwoodsman
Brothers In Arms ... must have played the cassette 100 times while I was buiding my house in 1989.

ArrowSnake
I like the first album the best. Down To The Waterline, Southbound Again, Six Blade Knife and of course Sultans Of Swing put that one over the line for me. What a fantastic debut album! goose
QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jun 17 2009, 11:22 AM) "Making Movies" is a tremendous song. You mean "Skateaway"? I love the drum beat and the understaed guitar work. Great emotion in the singing, which is almost talking. "She tortures taxi drivers just for fun..." goose
What do you all think of Knopfler's solo stuff? I really like "Sailing to Philadelphia". The title track is a great duet with James Taylor, and tells a good story. Tracks like "El Macho" have that classic Knopfler dry humor laced throughout. His wry lyrics are a lot of why I like his stuff.
Jack Aubrey
Definitely 'Love Over Gold'! Y'know, the first time I heard 'Telegraph Road' I thought it was Pink Floyd.
Ultra
Gonna have to go with Love Over Gold as well. The first two tracks, Telegraph Road and Private Investigations are probably my favorite two Dire Straits tracks ever.
goose
QUOTE (Ultra @ Jun 17 2009, 06:12 PM) Gonna have to go with Love Over Gold as well. The first two tracks, Telegraph Road and Private Investigations are probably my favorite two Dire Straits tracks ever. The production on that album is soooo clean. Awesome with headphones. Telegraph Road is a great epic. In the last few years I've really come to appreciate "It Never Rains" and the title track. "It Never..." builds so perfectly, up to the line "It's a sad reminder when your organ grinder has to come to you for rent...". Love the song. goose
QUOTE (ReRushed @ Jun 17 2009, 07:43 PM) It's very good. I hate Brothers in Arms, though. The radio-favored tracks are over played, for sure. But the title track, "Your Latest Trick", and the other less popular tracks are solid, IMO. I don't think I need to hear "Money for Nothing" ever again. When B"Brothers..." came out, the digital sound was other-worldly. It was the first CD, I remember being amazed out how crisp it sounded. Plus it had extended versions of the vinyl stuff. Whoa! Pretty amazing for 1984.

I'm really not into the country thing but I do have that Knopfler/Atkins cd. Don't forget Chet with Les Paul and Chet with Jimmy Reed. Those cds are in print from Japan! They are fantastic!!!
