The History Of The Double Neck Guitar: From Echols

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I was watching this cool "LOVE" documentary last night called "Love Story." It was great. Anyway I noticed some black and white film footage of Johnny Echols playing on a double neck guitar.

Who was the first guitar player to use such an incredible instrument? Was it Johnny?

Who else plays the double neck besides these obvious guitar players listed below:

Jimmy Page

Alex Lifeson

Steve Howe

Steve Hackett

Steve Vai

Claudio Sanchez

I'll give some more love to Geddy as well for playing the double neck bass. Incredible.

Gibson double neck: The original models, produced between 1958 and 1962, were basically twin-necked hollow-body instruments, with dual cutaways similar to the ES-175; these models are quite rare. In 1962, the EDS-1275 was changed to a solid-body design resembling the SG model; this version of the doubleneck is the most common and the best-known among players and collectors. It is interesting to note that while Rickenbacker is usually credited with developing the first production model electric 12-string guitar in 1963, the EDS-1275, which has a 12-string neck, was put into production in 1958, 5 years prior to the introduction of the Rickenbacker 12.

The model was popularized by Jimmy Page of the rock group Led Zeppelin.

Thanks Warty! I'm glad I bumped up this thread for more killer pictures!

SWEET!!

I love Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan but I hate MR. BIG!! Fokk Eric Martin. Talk about a chick with a dick! LOL!

Remember when Mr. Big opened for RUSH on the PRESTO Tour? WTF?

Was it merely because of their hit single? ADDICTED TO THAT RUSH?

How annoying. I sat through Mr. Big four times during that Tour. Shame on me.

I have a guitar encyclopedia that mentions a fellow by the name of John "Charlie" Whitney. He was a founding member of bands entitled "Family" and "Streetwalkers"

A Wiki article mentions that they played heavy experimental rock music that gained them a rep. as a progressive underground band.

In my encyclopedia, Whitney's guitar was a Gibson EDS -1275 built in 1966 ... no picture, but there is one of Alex.

Maybe Rushgoober has one of their songs ('66 to '73 the band "Family")
