Oh, and someone tell Zoe Saldana to eat a friggin' sandwich for Pete's sake!

Forget about her. The hottest chick in the movie was her roommate at the Academy - Gaila, the green Orion babe that Kirk was poking.

Finally watched this movie yesterday. Where to start?

I had high hopes for this movie, like many while we've had a bit too much exposure with some of the recent crappy TV series, I was actually looking forward to a relaunch of the film franchise.

This movie was terrible. I actually think I might have enjoyed "The Voyage Home" better than this one.

First off the casting absolutely sucked. Uhura was great and Bones was pretty damn good too, probably about as good as you could expect them to find and Spock was sort of a 6/10 perhaps. Just not good enough though when you consider Kirk sucked, Scotty sucked, Checkov sucked and Sulu was mediocre at best (can't help but wonder if my opinion might be different with a little known actor instead of Harold).

Add the fact that, at least for myself, I did not give half a shit about any of the characters, the story was weak and convoluted, no timing to it at all. Relied waay too much on special effects that were not even that great to begin with, and throw in stupid shit like squeezing Leonard Nemoy into it? Well, even as a first stab/effort whatever you want to call it, I was very disappointed in this movie. Worth the two hours for amusement and satisfy your morbid curiosity? Sure. Something intriguing and fresh that shows the Star Trek film franchise has a healthy future? Niet. I'd have to be very bored years down the road to ever sit through this one again. And that is sad.

Maybe it had a little to do with the unfortunate coincidence where I watched Terminator Salvation before this stinker. But man the new Terminator did everything right that Star Trek did wrong. Great casting and characters, well timed story that compelled you to care for the characters involved in it, *awesome* special effects that were used often but not so much they drowned out the story, and it played amazing homage to it's Terminator predecessors. If you are looking for action sci-fi and have to choose between the two, grab the new Terminator any day, for sure.

Kirk out.

Sorry you didn't like it Godeater2112.

I thought it was incredible, and I was HIGHLY skeptical of a remake of a show that I have grown up with since age 6.

Pretty much the only positives I would give it are a) the background story of all the characters at Starfleet Academy and Kirk's youth (car scene) were very solid. cool.gif the Romulans were very badass actually which was great. Oh and for a bonus point it was great to see at least one or two alien's that were more than just a humanoid with a pointy ear or ridged brow.

However the positives of those were completely dashed by one side-plot alone. Some awkward pointless love affair between Spock and Uhura. Yikes! That was some of the dumbest shit I'd seen since the "the Force comes from mitochondria in the bloodstream".

Glad you enjoyed it though man! I'm glad I rented instead of purchased.

I've never liked Star Trek, but I really enjoyed this movie.

Same here. When the film was first released, I read somewhere that those of us who didn't like ST would love it whereas the Trekkies would hate it. The reason cited that the Trekkies would hate it was that there was no "weighty theme" (translation: heavy-handed overly-preachy message [that's me being snarky - Jack]) that the Trekkies had come to expect from both the series and the movies.

After watching it with all the other blockbusters of the summer, and then re-watching after it and all the other summer blockbusters came out on blu, I have to say this was certainly the best of the bunch for me, and that's mainly because I STILL enjoy watching it. It's a world you can easily escape into, it's cool and the movie flows so well.

I might end up watching it tonight.

I despised that part of the plot. It was completely pointless and unnecessary. It made me wonder what they were trying to convey by including it.

But take that with a grain of salt because this is coming from someone who thinks it is utterly STUPID that every single movie coming out of Hollywood today has to have some sort of love story attached with it. WHAT THE F--K IS UP WITH THAT. Sex may sell, but it ruins a lot of movies. It's just a reflection of where we are as a society I guess.

See, I thought that was awesome! As a long-time trekker, it's something that would never have happened under regular circumstances, but his whole planet, including his mother was destroyed in front of him. He's half human and if there ever was a time he would be vulnerable to something like that, that was the time.

And besides, Zoe Saldana is hotter that the f*cking sun. Not directly related per se, but I'm just sayin'. wink.gif firedevil.gif

Finally seen it this weekend. LOVED IT!!! yes.gif

Can't wait for another one. Would actually love it if the movies could spawn another series involving THIS crew. I know it wouldn't have the same actors, but a whole series devoted to the new timeline of Kirk's Enterprise, would be awesome. yes.gif

Looks like I'm about the only Rush fan that thought this effort was weak! Glad everyone else enjoyed it.

Nerdlingers!

Wow, surprised you didn't like it. But looking back, when the one with the whales came out (part 4 I'm pretty sure), it seemed like everyone liked it except me. I even remember critics loving and stroaking it.

I watched this movie again the other night and wanted to point out that I was completely wrong about the score for this movie. The score is brilliant. - I said earlier in this thread that I didn't like the score. I was wrong. I guess I was a bit upset that they didn't keep the old TV score elements and made a judgement based on that.

Thanks for the clarification. It would explain why I couldn't figure out how she looked so young...

I knew there was something familiar about Spock's mother. She is a looker as well.

I'm going to come down on the sides of the people that loved the film.

Certainly, it wasn't perfect but it did exactly what it set out to do - delivered a well needed shot in the arm to a tired franchise that was in serious need of major life support after Nemesis (not as terrible as some made it out to be but not brilliant) and Enterprise (with the exception of Jolene Blalock - dull).

I've watched Star Trek since I was about 5 years old and, although I'm not the obsessive some seem to be (except for a brief 18 month period in my early 20s), I've always found it to be decent enough entertainment (until Enterprise, that is).

What JJ Abrams did was to bring back the entertainment value to the film. No, it didn't have the "weighty issues" but it featured, in my opinion, an "epic" style plot which, for my money, is far better.

In addition, I generally thought the cast were pretty on the ball - Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and, in particular, Karl Urban being the stand outs.

So, all in all, I think the Star Trek franchise has a pretty rosy future ahead of it.

^^^ Well said. new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I love how it isn't really a "re-boot" or re-telling as a whole new direction of a crew that went on a different line of time. Since time isn't linear, this course, in no way, cancels out the course that long time fans that are anal about their Trek, that's been so established. This is all new and quite cool.

It's that age old question, if you had taken THIS road instead, kinda thing. I like it.

Yes, they handled this superbly! The original cast's work is still legit and, at the same time, honored in the new movie. Popcorn movie making at its finest. You can't take Star Trek too seriously, right? wink.gif
