Not many rock band forums have a Scotch section. Good to see. My avatar shows my preference.

the Lagavulin has been a recent favorite of mine (no surprise, though - I'm already out) trink39.gif

what else do you favor, T?

Heavenly !

BP:

I'm seriously debating trying the Scapa on for size, but it's cost-prohibitive without tasting (and no one local has offered me any to date)

any notes/comparisons to offer?

I have a bottle of LaPhroaig Quarter Cask on my bar in the basement that's been calling to me telepathically in my sleep the last few days.

Bought a bottle of the Balvenie 12 year doublewood today. I was able to crack it open this evening and share a few glasses with an old friend. Outstanding. As I took my first swig of it (for the first time ever), I said to my friend, "Wow, there is a lot going on here."

I am quite new to the single malts, but have what I have tasted I h've enoyed immensely.

I usually get a Glenfiddich 12 yr, the local store only carries this and Glenlivet in single malts.

I am looking for something new. I have tried The Macallen 10, 12 and 25 as well. The 25 blew me away, it was like a glass of liquid smoke.

Found a store close by with a better selection and am deciding between:

Aberlour 12

Highland Park 12

Glenlivet 12 (maybe 15)

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

After reading this thread it doesn't seem any of the above is a bad choice. Any input as to which would be similar to what I've already tasted would be great.

For me, it's a toss-up between the HP12 and the Laphroaig Quarter Cask.

Because I'm an Islay nut, I'd probably plump for the Laphroaig.

But, they are all fine malts. The Aberlour 12 is a real beauty too. Really sweet and fruity.

All 4 are a million million miles away from the Glenfiddich 12, so you're in for a real treat.

Excellent, thank you!

I think I'll go for the HP first.

I may try a few 375ml bottles for taste testing purposes.

I'll let you know how it goes afer this weekend.

Lovely.

I opened a 17 year old Ballantine's last night, the 2010 World Whiskey of the year.

Oh. My. God.

A lot of whiskey snobs dismiss blends. Their loss.

As an aside, I received my "Mike Jackson's Guide to Malt Whiskeys" from Amazon the other day. An essential tome for those interested in the worlds best Whiskey (Scottish!).

I'll suggest another - the Glenfiddich 15. Great bang for the buck.

Speaking of Bang for the Buck, Costco has Lagavulin for $53.99.

Bought 3 bottles yesterday.

Trader Joe's has the very (imho) underrated Dalwhinnie for a low price I don't recall, as well as a good deal on the Balvenie Doublewood.

The Lagavulin 16 is beyond description. I'd sell my children for a bottle in a pinch!

What a lovely box-set! How fabulous is Sunny??!?!?

How's the Cragganmore? The 12 used to be heavenly, but the last expression I tried was a poor facsimile of it's brilliant heyday.

No house should be without the mighty Lag 16 and Talisker 10. The Talisker 10 is still the best Talisker. Their Distiller Editions are too sherry infused and you lose a lot of that lovely smokiness.

Slainte!

She is awesome.

I liked the Craggenmore the best of the three. It had a much different flavor. The others had a salty/spicy finish that I wasn't terribly fond of. I tried an Islay at a party and wasn't too fond of it either. I think my taste buds prefer the Highland distillations.

Try any Old Pulteney, it's an "island" highland, comes from the tiny island of Wick.

I've yet to meet an Old Pulteney I didn't like.

Nice to know the Cragganmore is tasting well.
