I was on a plane back in '84, flying from Anchorage, AK. to Seattle, Wa. My flight had been cancelled so they had upgraded me to first class on the next one. I wound up sitting across the aisle from none other than Roy Scheider. I kept glancing over, wondering if I should ask for an autograph. He noticed that I was looking over and gave me a classic raised-eyebrows 'what do you want?' expression. I hesitated for a moment and blurted out: 'You were right, you needed a bigger boat.'. He smiled, shook his head, and went back to reading his paper. I left him alone for the rest of the flight.

I met Alan Funt in a theatre in SF years ago. He came up to me & said "Excuse me..." I immediately realized who he was & thought Oh God what silly ass stupid thing have I done today? But all he wanted was dorections to the bathroom.

I met John Matuszak at the airport when I was a kid. Biggest guy I have ever seen anywhere. His arms were bigger than my legs, he was just HUGE. Really friendly too. (Roid rage must not have kicked in yet laugh.gif )

I met Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull once. But that was only because a handful of fans were standing outside the dressing room door for an hour after he did his Rubbing Elbows concert last year. He didnt exit through that door, but was kind enough to meet and sign an autograph for everyone who waited. Very nice person.

Met and/or seen a number of famous celebs:

When we lived in Athens, GA, we used to see the members of REM around town.

When we lived in Williamsburg, VA, Bruce Hornsby and his date walked into the sushi restaurant where we were eating and sat at the bar next to us.

Got David Hasselhoff's autograph at a Dead show last year. He was in town for some beach promotion.

And Rudy Bosch from Survivor lives here. He was guest of honor at a function at my husband's college.

My main thing is booksignings, though. Probably the biggest seller I met was Anne Rice.

I used to work at the Charleston airport (the small private one) -- I got to meet a lot of different folks:

Metaliica (what nice young men)! They invited us into the plane for beers

Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter

Def Leppard (not such nice guys ... didn't realize they were has-beens by that time)

Kenny Rogers ... stepped on my hand

Jane Fonda and Ted Turner (I wanted to spit on her for my dad but refrained)

Jimmy Buffett (he has a house in Charleston)

Sammy Hagar

Lately, I have been to a lot of concerts and have met the members of Blur, Travis, Damien Rice, and StarSailor

Oh yeah .. and I pissed off Bruce Willis ... he was being a total butt and so I asked him when Jeremy Irons was coming in (they were filming Die-Hard III) and told him what a huge fan I was of Jeremy's

About two years ago, I was sitting with some friends in a bar (yes, one of those bars), when one of them said Jimmy Fallon just walked by. No one really cared; we see famous people around all the time. Anyway, about a minute later I got up to get another drink. Some guy, who turned out to be Fallon's shadow, asked me if I wanted to play pool with J.F. I looked around like, Why me?, but said "Sure." I played him three games: 3 up, 3 down. I don't remember much of what he said during the games (I was drunk), but I do remember that everything he said was with a British accent. I called him on it, and his reply was again British. His friend never shut up, though. I have no idea why he or his friend asked me to play, but it was fun, nonetheless.

I am not one to bother celebrities, but I am not above it.

Bob Crane (Col. Hogan)

I met him at a Buddy Rich/Louie Bellson concert in 1978 (my first "professional" concert). He was a drummer and happened to be at the show. Got his autograph on the show program.

Robin Williams #1

Met him at the PSA (former airline) counter at the SF airport just after John Belushi's death in 1982. Apparently we were all on the same plane from southern California. My brother got his autograph on a scrap of paper. Williams looked drugged, but was very pleasant.

Chris Holmes (WASP)

They were opening for KISS in 1986 on the second no-make-up tour. I was on the rail in front of some PA speakers, just zoning out big time, staring off into the distance. Holmes motioned to me trying to get my attention to see if I was ok. I shook my head and regained full consciousness and noticed Mr. Holmes motioning to me. I looked up, smiled, and acknowledged what seemed genuine concern for me (let's face it, concerts can get rough). He said "OK" and smiled and continued to rock on. He gave me a pick that I can no longer find. It was made of metal. Very cool. I always thought this was a cool gesture from a guy in a band I didn't like that much (at the time). Whenever I see a WASP video or the Decline of the Western Civilization I reflect on this incident. He's alright in my book, despite being a drunken mess a lot of the time.

Peter Erskine

Met him at a drum clinic at Drum World in Daly City (near SF) in the mid 80s. Told him about the old Slingerland catalog from 1976 I had with him in it. He commented about the crappy finish those drums had. Surprisingly Neil was not in that catalog, otherwise I would have known about Rush then.

Kenny Aaronoff

My friend Adam and I had a long discussion with him following a drum clinic at a local Guitar Center. We spoke for about 2 hours about different aspects of drumming. A really cool guy.

Met him again 2 years later and he remembered us.

Les Paul #1 and Steve Vai

At Les Paul day at the House of Blues in LA in 1994. Talked to Les for a bit after the show. He signed my Epiphone Sheraton (a semi-hollow guitar like Alex's old 355) as well as my dad's Gold Top Les Paul. A very nice guy. During the show Slash and Steve Vai were inches from me (onstage). At one point I talked to Vai and tried to give him a tape of my drumming, which he of course declined to take. Can't blame me for trying.

Robin Williams #2

I had just started school at the Academy of Art College in SF back in 1995 and was walking around the city checking out where my classes were to be held. I saw Mr. Williams walk into a software store as I walked down the street. After walking a few more steps down the street I realized who he was and sheepishly walked into the store. I walked up to him and said that I really enjoyed his work and shook his hand. He seemed a bit nervous, but I am pretty harmless. I mentioned the story of seeing him at the airport and told him that I had just started film school. He wished me luck and I was on my way. Very genuine man. Shorter than me, and I am not really tall at 5' 9".

Joe DiMaggio

My family was in a suite at the Oakland Coliseum for an A's game and we noticed that in the suite one over from ours there was old Mr. Coffee himself. My grandfather played ball with his brother Dom in the 30s and 40s. We saw him exit his suite and my grandfather wanted to say hi. We approached him from behind and he became rather unnerved and before we could say anything he said that he didn't give autographs. My grandfather said that he played ball with his brother but he wanted nothing to do with us. Oh well. He was dead a couple of years later. Poor guy never got over a lot of stuff.

Les Paul #2 and then some

Les Paul plays every Monday in NYC and everytime my dad and I are in town we go to see him play (in fact my dad was there last week during the convention). I had him sign a pickguard from my newest Les Paul. I mentioned the LA show in '94 and he said "Some guy brought a hollowbody for me to sign." I said that was me. I showed him the Epiphone catalog with him in it and he signed that too. He said that some of the Epiphones were better than the Gibsons.

NAMM 2004: Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, Alan White, Eric Bloom, Terry Bozzio, Carmine and Vinny Appice, Danny Carey, Rudy Sarzo, Chester Thompson, Dave Weckl, Simon Phillips, Steve Smith, Stewart Copeland, and many more than I can remember. Most of these were casual but I had pix taken with a few of these.

James Hetfield

I was getting a hot dog for lunch a couple of weeks ago and Hetfield was having a dog with his young son. He was all cleaned up, despite his tattoos. He looked at me as I figured out why I recognized him. I'm not that big of a Metallica fan. I didn't want to intrude, plus I couldn't think anything clever to say other than "Can't wait for the movie" (which I was not) or "You guys really suck now that Cliff is gone." He had a look like I was going to bother him. Must be the hair.

There are others, but this is more than plenty.

Very cool Cyg! Thank you for sharing!

I have heard Robin Williams is extremely nervous/shy kinda like Neil Peart with the public - did you sense that? (Particularly maybe in the later meet)

I have met La Jon and Morgan ( the drummer) from Sevendust. Nice enough guys. But I got the Morgan good! laugh.gif He was signing my daughters pants and she lifted her leg up to sign by her knee, well the only way to do that was to hold her leg. I turned to him and said " hey buddy watch your hands, thats my kid, no funny stuff" In my best Moms voice. He looked at me so funny, look scared! laugh.gif Hes like dont worry I wont! I told I am just kidding! I started laughing at him. He seemed to be a very shy, but nice and polite guy, I dont think he found the joke to be quite as funny as I did. fing.gif

Yeah, Robin Williams was definitely a little nervous when I approached him. I figured he was so friendly by his performances. I wouldn't want someone doing that kind of stuff to me.

The NAMM show is a different story because the celebrities there are usually representing musical instrument manufacturers and are there to be seen.
