Dare I say it, but his voice actually sounds better to my ears in the 70's than in the 60's.

Right now I own 9 Dylan albums, plus a couple of the (official) bootleg series, and I gotta say, it's all pretty stellar.

Admittedly, Dylan was an acquired taste for me, but he's grown on me more and more over time.  A truly prolific outstanding genius.

Even check out his latest few, especially Time out of Mind!! (Lanois is too f***ing cool for words). I still have not caught up with his latest though. I adore his voice through all the many incarnations it has offered up!! Enjoy the ride, you still have much more to discover trink39.gif

no, but i knew it was only a short matter of time before people'd be trying to convince me to get the newer albums.

like with most music for me, i may do so after i get all the 60's and 70's releases that are supposed to be good...

Fair enough bud, but even in the 70s he had some patchy affairs. All I'm saying is dont dismiss the modern Dylan before giving it a good go or you're missing out.

And as for his recent stuff, Time Out of Mind is a can't-miss. Might be a top 5 Dylan album for me.

Staggering for so late, agreed, could make mine as well.

Saw him last week, what a man. Still has it, whatever "it" is.

Lots of stuff from the new album, Together Through Life, very good album, probably too much accordion...........

But his versions of Just Like A woman, Masters of War, Stuck Inside The Mobile, Pillbox, Highway 61, Ain't Talking, Thunder On The Mountain & Blowin' In The Wind were mind-blowing.......but the rendition of Like A Rolling Stone was off the planet. Probably the best "live" moment of my life. It took the roof off the building.

Gary, below would be the other Bob albums I love, as well as the ones you listed. Check them out.

Nashville Skyline - for Girl From The North Country(with Johnny Cash) alone.

Street Legal - The beginning of the end for many Bob fans but I love it. It's really expansive, Changing of the Guard and Senor in particular.

Infidels - Jokerman, I and I etc....say no more

Oh Mercy - his re-birth.......thanks to Daniel Lanois. Most of The Time is perfect. Man In The Long Black Coat is perfect.

Time Out of Mind is as good as the guys have been saying. For Not Dark Yet alone it's worth buying.

Love and Theft & Modern Times and the new one. There is one out there chronicling life the way this man is.

I've been using the help of this site in determining which Dylan releases I still want to get: http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/bob_dylan

Desire (1976) is about as far as I want to venture into the 70's with him.

These are the albums I still want:

Bob Dylan (1962)

The Times They Are-A Changin' (1964)

Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964)

The Bootleg Series Volume 2, 4, 5 & 6

I also need to get The Basement Tapes

The ones I'm avoiding are:

Nashville Skyline (1969) - from what I've heard of this, too country for my tastes, and Dylan doesn't really sound like himself on this one after giving up cigarettes - too clean sounding.

Self-Portrait (1970) - the album he made supposedly to get people to hate his music so they'd stop bugging him. pretty universally panned.

Dylan (1973) - demos released by the record company - panned even more than self-portrait

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) - supposed to be more "slight" due to it being a soundtrack and not a full on album per se. i wouldn't say no to it used for a buck or two, but otherwise not one i'm seeking out.

i've heard a couple of modern Dylan tracks and they were good. i'm sure i'll check one or two of them out eventually, but honestly they're not a high priority for me right now...

His live stuff varies but check 'Before the Flood' with the Band for his best singing (i.e. with feeling and emotion).

And get any compilation that has 'Blind Willie McTell' - surely the greatest song left off any album.

It's on The Bootleg Series Volume 3, from the box set The Bootleg Series Volume 1-3. This is an official release of tracks that were previously only available on bootlegs.

It's an amazing song, admittedly, but there are tons of other amazing songs on this collection as well. It's often been written about that Dylan didn't always use his best material on his officially released albums - much of that material is here. Really stunning essential stuff if you're a Dylan fan.

Your next 5 are essential, get them at all costs. Out of the ones you're avoiding Id say Nashville is the only oversight. The country style is hard to take initially but there is some charm to it. Let us know when you get through those other choices smile.gif

My dad was at the Madison Square Garden show they recorded for that album. True story.

Yep...you can hear him shout out "Boooobbbbb!" a few times....

...."Get in the hole!" was a bit much though.

Just kidding. Must've been great gig to be at.

Excellent movie

It is a collection of vignettes actually with different actors (including actress Cate Blanchett) portraying Bob at different eras of his life.

Interestingly enough each of the characters are not named Bob Dylan but have their own names though the characters are based on Dylan's life. For example there is Woody Guthrie played by a black child actor who represents Bob's so called "hobo" days. Cate Blanchett is Jude Quinn portraying Bob circa 1966 during Dylan's big heyday in the 60's. Blanchett was nominated for an Oscar for this part and her part is my fav of the movie.

Christian Bale, Richard Gere (Billy The kid) and, in one of his last performances, Heath Ledger are also in the film.

It's a little weird and bit pretentious but I like it. cool.gif cool10.gif

Hmmm... I just finished listening to Together Through Life for the first time. Hmmm... it just sounds like more of the same. Sure, there are some very good songs, but overall he sounds like he's finally repeating himself in his golden years. I'm a little disappointed. I'll give it a generous B-.

I just listened to Part 5 of the Bootleg Series (The Rolling Thunder Revenue) and it is STUNNING. By far my favorite of the entire Bootleg Series which is saying something because I LOVE the Royal Albert Hall concert. Probably my favorite version ever of Hurricane.

I overheard some in a record store. His voice is a tad on the gravelly side these days... unsure.gif

Sorry guys! I prefer "Blonde On Blonde" porno style. Uh that would be Ginger Lynn and Amber Lynn. Damn time flies when you're having fun. Glad I married a blonde!

Anyway I saw Bob Dylan open for AEROSMITH years ago and I almost fell asleep and hit my head on the concrete floor.

He is a genius writer but that's about it. His harp playing is like listening to a dog whistle for humans. My head might explode like in the Cronenberg film SCANNERS listening to that shit.

I would say that "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blood On The Tracks" are worth owning. AFTER THAT....
