Your thoughts on the internet?

I, personally, think that it's a bit of both a gift and an abomination. The internet contains a massive wealth of knowledge and entertaiment. However, there is also junk and such on the Information Super Highway. Too much untruthful junk, among other things.

Your thoughts?

The internet is like any technological advancement since the beginning of history - in itself it is neither good nor bad, positive nor negative. However, the uses to which it is put can go either way.

On the whole, I think the internet is a positive thing. A wealth of information that, once, would have taken you months to gather is now accesible at the click of a mouse button. The many forums like this bring together people who, otherwise, would never have met thus many friendships are formed, albeit in a virtual form. Hours of stimulating entertainment can be had that requires some thought and interaction on our part.

I could properly think of a dozen other assets but I've not been up long and I'm not fully awake yet.

Good points: You can find almost anything out that you need to know. You can buy things (reasonably) safely. The Rush Forum biggrin.gif

Bad Points: Farging POP UPS!!! comp26.gif arrrrrrggghhhh...I have a pop-up blocker, but it doesn't even block half of them!

Also, my connection is now far too slow. I need broadband, but for some reason can't get it where I am yet.

Conclusion: A natural technological advancement for the World, but also a minefield for corruption.

These words could have been applied to television back in the fifties. It is neither good nor bad as a whole, but it also should be utilized with great care. People will praise it as a means of speeding up communication, others will decry it as a giant repository of pornography. It is what you perceive it to be.

I think the internet is like almost everything; it's good if used in the moral way, it's bad if it's abused. I try to concentrate on what's good on the internet instead of what's not. There are alot of great things on the internet and that's what I choose to read and view. This site is a great forum but it could be abused too.

Some very good points there Cato. However, the only thing I disliked about the post was your use of the word 'moral'. To me, that conjures Christian fundementalism and finger pointing (if that wasn't you intention, I apologise) when what they perceive as morality is forced upon others who might not agree with that point of view.

I refuse to utilise the word moral anymore because of the personal attacks Christians have made upon me under the guise of 'morality'. In its place I use ethical, sensible, responsible and a host of others that do not have this unpleasant (to my mind) connotation.

However, I totally agree with you. As a medium for the passing of knowledge and information, the internet is without peer - how I wish I had had access to the net while doing my dissertation at University. Similarly, as I commented earlier, it is an entertaining form of education as it involves a certain degree of intelligence to operate to its fullest potential.

One of the problems comes on a social level. While a person on forums like this one is making friends and interacting with others, they are not doing so on a fface-to-face level. It is easy to get so sucked into this virtual world that the real world outside is ignored.

While I don't agree with the frothing at the mouth technophobes who feel that the internet is the greatest evil since television and rock music (obviously not since I'm here), I feel that care has to be taken with its use. My wife spends a lot of time on various Lord of the Rings actors' forums and some of the things that get posted on there I find a little alarming.

Apparently, a lot of teenage girls are writing things on these forums about Orlando Bloom's fiancee that, it they were actually forwarded to her, would be considered harassment and threatening behaviour.

I fully intend to allow my children access to the internet when they are older but, be sure, I am going to closely monmitor what they are doing on there.

The internet has made me realize there are no "real men" anymore. They like to hide behind bullshit and think they are oh so clever.

The only good thing I can think of is porn. 24/7 baby.

Sounds like your little buddy...u know who I'm talkin' about ph34r.gif cool10.gif

I read a quote once which I'm trying to track down, can't remember who said it (wish it was me). A rough approximation is -

The internet is like an elephant. It has the ability to inspire awe and perform incredible feats of memory, but also has the capacity to generate emormous amounts of dung

Haha. That is very accurate.
