Antivirus Software

It's time to update my Antivirus software. My year's subscription to Norton's virus defs are up, and I'm considering ditching Norton in favor of a different brand, because I'm getting the feeling that Norton is overpriced and overrated. I was looking at Trend Micro's PC-Illin. I know some of you use their free online scan service, but do you know how their software is? Do you have to pay for def updates, and are they on top of all the current threats as Norton supposedly is?

So, anybody familiar with Trend Micro's PC-Illin?

It came in the bundle on my Sony Vaio laptop ... but I immediately added NAV.

so I can't tell how it performed.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com I believe is the PCCillin and they have a free online scan that is AWESOME and always up to date.

I use that as well as ZoneAlarm.

Yes, it's the same company as that online scan. But I was wondering how their program was. Do you have to pay for updates? Are they on top of the latest threats?

I have been hearing all sorts of good things about the Grisoft AVG. My mother was having trouble with her Norton bloatware, so I installed AVG Free. It is as up to date as Norton, works in a similar fashion and the regular definition updates are always free. They make their money selling corporate versions and upgrade Pro versions. For the home user, AVG is completely free and very effective. After I installed it and updated the defs, AVG found THREE trojans that NAV missed.

Did you guys know that if you have NAV and it expires...you can uninstall it, clean the reg and re-install. Get updates and your good for another year! No $$ needed.

Although, I stopped using it because of the way it works. I don't like apps running in the background. Uses too much memory.
