Slayer
Fear Factory
Nevermore

I like these bands as well...

I consider myself a true metalhead, and it's hard to think of ALL the bands I'm either into, or have been heavily into at some point in time. The first ones to come to mind are:

Judas Preist

Iron Maiden

Pantera

Anthrax

Mastodon

Megadeth

Ozzy

Opeth

Damn! I know there are so many more, but I can't think of them right now sad.gif But this gives you an idea! biggrin.gif

Okay, I totally forgot Black Sabbath. oops.gif

That's a great list but where THE F*** is SLAYER!!!!

Oh, they're over in the "crappy metal bands that have gotten even worse over the years" thread.

It's...

---------------->

Over that-a-way.

Also, Suffocation owns. Effigy of the Forgotten = amazing DM.

Here are a few that I don't think were mentioned yet:

The Sword (Sabbath riffs and pretty decent fantasy style lyrics)

Watch The Die! (kinda like Suicidal Tendencies on coke)

Bloodbath (either singer is good)

The Crown (excellent death/thrash)

Machine Head (newest cd The Blackening is a must)

Check them out you will be bangin yer head

for symphonic metal, listen to some Rhapsody, actually they are called Rhapsody of Fire now. or Luca Turilli

Actually... I hate Rhapsody of Fire. I also find Luca Turilli to be one of the most overrated guitarists out there.

I used to be into Jag Panzer quite a bit - they still putting out new material?

I saw them open for Iced Earth one tour - talk about an amazing show!

Oh and I really can't comprehend any metal fan slagging Slayer so bad... personally I love Slayer but I would think even haters could appreciate what they've done for the genre.

SLAYER!

And sorry for ragging on Slayer... I mean, sure, they're done a lot for metal... but to me, their music is just mostly... really bad and unenjoyable. I know a lot of you would say the same thing about band like Darkthrone, whom I love.

So yeah.

I grew up with NWOHM stuff, so I generally love metal, though I'm pretty out of touch with the modern crop.

Judas Priest

Saxon

Iron Maiden

Metallica (early)

Diamond Head (criminally underrated band)

Megadeth

Slayer (Reign in Pain tour 87 was the best gig by any band I have yet seen)

The Scorpions

Black Sabbath

+1

I still listen to the classic metal. The music of the modern stuff that I hear seems fantastic. The two things that throw me are the vocals (metal vocals should be tough but still grounded in musicality) and the lyricical subjects. If you listen to the old stuff they covered a lot of different subjects.

I also listened to

Celtic Frost/Hellhammer

Motorhead

Venom

Voivod

Saxon

Accept

Grim Reaper

Exodus

Savatage (their early work plus their shows when they were still called Avatar)

Nasty Savage

plus most of the others already mentioned.

Another thing that probably led me away from the metal of the eighties was the really silly arguments over who was "more metal" and which was "real metal." Death, black, speed, thrash, power, doom, etc.. That was all very stupid.

Jag Panzer is great - sorta lost track of them though they still putting out albums?

Last time I saw them live was opening for Iced Earth. What a show!

Speaking of metal I just noticed Cradle of FIlth is touring and playing Montreal on the 20th. Now I'm wondering whether it is too insane to go to that show - since it is sandwiched between Rush shows in Toronto and Ottawa for me on the 19th and 21st.

*twitch*

Anybody who likes grindcore needs to go get this album, right now... I never thought they'd be this good again after the pretty dull Terrifyer. But after loving this one for weeks, I can safely say... they're back.

Oh man! Anyone else going to a show on the "Black Tyranny" tour with Arch Enemy and Machine Head?

Frig September is going to be tough on the wallet. If three Rush shows weren't enough now two road trips to Montreal for Cradle of Filth and now this! Sure won't complain though - I've been waiting and waiting for Arch Enemy to tour again - and have long loooong wanted to see Machine Head live.
