iamarushfan
personally i think it is one of the worst sounding rush albums ever. its clipped to the max, and you can barely tell what is going on , its so loud. perfomarnce and songwriting is fantastic, but oooohhhh it sounds like SHITTT
furie
I like it. I think it's the best since Presto. I'm not entirely happy with the order of the songs, it seems a bit disjointed in the middle....
circumstantial tree
I think Vapor Trails is the best thing they've done since Hold Your Fire. I don't pay too much attention to the production. Just as long as the songs are good.

Slaine mac Roth
I've got to sit on the fence with this because, in places, I think VT sounds awful - generally during the louder and rockier sections of the album. At these times, it seems thin and distorted and, occasionally, painful to listen to. However, during the mellower parts (the start of Ghost Rider is one that springs to mind), the sound is fine. I can't say that its a badly mixed album, more that some parts weren't as well mixed as they should have been (and I've got splinters in my arse)

iamarushfan
very good album indeed freeze is one of my most favorite songs by them but try comparing the sound of vapor trails to the sound of power windows or gup which one is easier on the ears? circumstantial tree
QUOTE (iamarushfan @ Dec 8 2004, 06:22 PM) very good album indeed freeze is one of my most favorite songs by them but try comparing the sound of vapor trails to the sound of power windows or gup which one is easier on the ears? Like I said, I don't pay attention to the production. The song is what is important. I couldn't care less if the record has snap, crackle, and pop. Besides, I've heard much worse produced music and still enjoyed the songs.
launchpad67a
Un-listenable! I looked for my cd a few weeks ago then realized I was using it as a coaster for my beer! It's a real shame because the writing isn't bad. This is an an old topic.

Moonraker
Some of the most emotional music I have heard them do since P/G. I am a fan of darker themes, and was very much drawn to that nature of the album. The fact that the mixing was done so terribly was a bit of a distraction, but also added an extra aspect to the music. It gave it a more chaotic, distracted feel that goes along very well with the topics the lyrics are writing about, a very dark feel to it. Just love it. Fair point, but I firmly believe the lyrical depth of the album will shine through even more when the production is tidied up on a remaster. It's a great album in it's own right, but unfortunately the sound quality prevents it from being a true classic IMO

Bastille Night
Love the songs tremendously, but hate the sound. Some of these songs demand to be played at high volume, but this is not feasible since the distortion/clipping/whatever is unbearable when you turn it up past a moderate volume. I can't believe that these self-proclaimed perfectionists allowed its release with such shabby sound me----> <----sound engineer, or whoever was responsible for mixing/recording VTs Now, since we're beating dead horses, I am going to head over to the HYF and Tai Shan threads to extoll their many virtues. I do this solely to aggravate those older board members that get uptight when someone new starts a discussion that was already covered several months ago . Newbies Unite !! I voted with sounds like shit - and yet the songs are so f'ing good it doesn't stop me from listening to it - OFTEN. Unfortunately, I'm constantly battling with the EQ in a futile effort to get it to sound better. At the end of the day, it's the quality of the songs that win out over the [lack of] quality in the sound. This CD is awesome!!
iamtoughtobeat
I thought it could of sounded a lot better. One of my least favorite Rush albums. But thats not saying much cause I still give it an 8/10.
Proggy
It does sound awful to me, and unfortunately the songs would have to be much better for me to get past the sound on this record... I really like about half of the songs, but it still is one of my least played Rush cd's, I'm afraid. Whenever I do play the whole thing through, I feel just worn out at the end of it, it's just too much of the same sound landscape for a whopping -what, sixty-five minutes or something like that? But after the holidays I will have an "edited" version of VT (getting rid of four or five songs should do it) in my hands so perhaps then I will give it a spin more often! I did discover that when I listen to it on a far more moderate sound level, the distortion irritates me much less, but since I also have major problems with Geddy's voice on VT (it's not as up front as it should be, no intimacy to speak of) then turning the sound down makes it almost impossible to hear his vocals. So no, can't say that I'm a huge fan of this record -it wore off its welcome rather quickly. Still, I can live with the production on Nocturne, Vapor Trail, How It Is and Ghost Rider. Earthshine, too, is one of my favs but just can't bear to listen to the studio version of it -better to stick to the fabulous live versions where this song is concerned. CygnusX-1Bk2
The mix is fine. The mastering job was f***ed up. Mastering takes place after mixing by someone who did not work on the recording process. The mastering engineer brings in fresh ears and "masters" the album for mass production and suitable for public consumption. Bob Ludwig is considered THE mastering engineer and VT was the first studio effort by Rush not mastered by Mr. Ludwig. The guy who mastered MFH was selected to master VT. He did a great job with MFH, but the record company must have pressed him to make VT really loud, destroying the intergity of the audio recorded. But please understand that mastering and mixing are two totally different stages of an album's production. circumstantial tree
I believe the mastering was done by David Leonard, who worked with Prince. The other guy involved somewhere was Paul Northfield. I forget who was responsible for what.
