Light from the Sun is reflected off of the Earth onto the Moon. Some of this light is then reflected off of the Moon back towards the Earth. Because of this we see part of the Moon illuminated by the Sun and the rest of the Moon dimly illuminated by this doubly reflected light (which we call earthshine). source: http://www.astro.umd.edu/education/astro/m...earthshine.html

rickyrob
Seriously though, fairly cryptic lyrics. I can only see it as a song devoted to the World as a living entity Either that or its about Neil changing to a werewolf....as there is a slight indication of this in some of the words
Disco
Thanks GG, it's always useful to have chums that know stuff... So, just so I'm clear, the earthshine isn't the bright arc of light (which is being illuminated directly by light directly from the sun) but the duller part (which is being illuminated by light that has bounced back from the Earth). Is this right? I really like the song, I think the imagery is beautiful and Geddy's delivery passionate, emotive and committed, but does anyone want to have a crack at telling me what the songs about? GhostGirl
Yes, the darker part is the "earthshine." It's "reflected light, to another's sight." I see it as Neil paying tribute to his beloved's beauty and the fascination he feels...and how being with her brings happiness to him. "My borrowed face And my third-hand grace Only reflect your glory..."

Disco
Thanks for that GG... I've just checked out the lyrics you posted up, and quite felt goosebumps as I read it; it's a love song, but with a sense he is reaching out from a point of loss (which he was). Disco PS To think I started athread saying he wasn't all that as a lyricist, shame on me...still that's growth then...
Rolinda Bonz
It reminds me of the nursery rhyme: I see the moon And the moon sees me And the moon sees the one that I long to see So God bless the moon And God bless me And God bless the one that I long to see Oh yeah, AND IT ROCKS!!! furie
on a related topic, there is something called lunar libriation (libra, scales, get it?). due to earth gravitational pull on the moon and the tork created, the moon wobbles in it's orbit. this way we can actually see more than 50% of the moon's surface. http://homepages.wmich.edu/~korista/ss-images/lunation_ajc.gif

My_Shrimp_Cot
While waiting for my daughter at the orthodontist, I saw an article on "Earthshine" in I believe National Geographic or something. I only had time to say "oh look, an article on Earthshine ...cool" and she was done...and I had to go pay.

DoubleAgent420
Earthshine is one of my favorite songs ever. I think the song is about finding hope, something that I would think Neil went through during that time....... beautiful lyrics. Amazing song.
