Neil meets the Dalai Lama? Wearing a pony tail

Neil Peart sighting at Dalai Lama appearance

This past week, the Dalai Lama made a visit to Pasadena, California and, according to a fan who emailed me, Neil Peart was there. I have no reason to doubt this fan (on the contrary - his story makes complete sense to me, and I believe it), but I'll have to file this as "rumor" until I can find any cooborating evidence. This fan's son, a buddhist, attended the event and reported seeing both Neil Peart and his wife, Carrie Nuttall there. Here's his report:

My son attended the Dalai Lama event the last 3 days in Pasadena and said that Neil Peart's wife was scouting everything (halls, dining

rooms, etc), then Neil would show up when the coast was clear. My son stayed at the Sheraton Club Level set of rooms (about 12

rooms) for special guests, which is a locked entry way requiring

special access, which also provides wine, and other very nice things

free of charge in a living room atmosphere, where Club levels guests

can meet. There were several Lama's there as well. The event began

each morning at 9 AM, so even if Neil lives in LA he would most

likely stay in Pasadena. And the Sheraton is connected by a walkway

directly to the VIP entrance to the event.

Anyway, my son said that Neil had "filled in" his receding hair line

slightly, had a braided pony tail (about 6 inches), and stands tall,

well over 6 feet. My son approached him while in the club lounge after

Neil's wife left to scout the hall, and said: "excuse me sir, are you

"the professor?" To which, Neil replied: " I am, most certainly not

the professor anymore. And Neil winked at him, to avoid further

conversation as if to say, yes I am but I don't know you, so please

excuse me. And my son left him alone.

Neil had a VIP pass to enter on the side entrance as well. And there

were many people in the auditorium of the event attempting contact

with him and his wife. Anyway, that's the story that I heard. Sorry,

no pictures. ...

I don't see any reason why this fan would make something like this up, so I certainly believe it. For one thing, it completely "fits" with what Neil has been saying in interviews regarding how "religious themes" have served as lyrical inspiration for him on the next album. Indeed, in this article Neil states:

... "I looked for the good side of faith," Peart says. "To me it ought to be your armor, something to protect you and something to console you in dark times. But it's more often being turned into a sword, and that's one big theme I'm messing with." ...

I find the description of Neil as "filling in" his receding hairline and having a braided ponytail again (harkening back to the Power Windows days) very interesting. It's certainly possible - I haven't seen any recent pics of Neil, so I have no idea what he looks like these days. However, as I just reported, on October 1st, we'll get to see Neil's first TV interview in nearly 10 years on VH1 Classic. If he has a ponytail, then that makes this fan's story that much more believable. smile.gif

That's interesting, always seems rock performers seem to gravitate to this, Like George Harrison and the Beatles.

Thanks treeduck.

I believe this story. It makes perfect sense and sounds just like Neil from what i have heard him to be like with (as he calls them) "strangers" (which they indeed are).

Neil must not like these kind of encounters however, and I can imagine him thinking that he cannot even go see the Dalai Lama without someone "harrasing" him!

He will have to start wearing disguises! Maybe he could have dressed as one of the Lamas and snuck in with them! rofl3.gif

Thanks for bringing us this news Treeduck and I think that this fits perfectly with Neil's religious themes. 2.gif

"Here I go again on my own, like hobo I was born to walk alone." Original lyrics.

You know that when Whitesnake put out that song again in 1987 they changed the lyric from hobo to drifter.

Is Whitesnake really a metaphor to a male human penis?

Probably.

So Carrie was scouting everything and then when the coast was clear Neil would show up? He's not exactly a household name is he, don't think many people would know who he is or who Rush are, sounds like he's either on a real ego trip or he has a serious social anxiety problem that he needs to get help with! pretty sad either way!

It does at first, but if this story is true, apparently one person there knew who he was.

So this was 10 years ago? I never heard this story - would be interesting to see Neil with a ponytail. I knew he had the rat tail. But to see him now with a ponytail would be odd.

It would come as no surprise if Neil was a Buddhist.I am no way a strict Buddhist but I do take on board some of the teachings and principles. I have felt that some of Neil's later day lyrics ,particularly on S&A,have pointed this way. I know a lot of people think Neil is an oddball but I find his lyrics and his views quite sensible and thought provoking. But then again a lot of people including my wife think I am oddball.

His views may or may not be sensible but he's without a doubt an oddball.
