Have you tried the Korg Radias? It looks and sounds rather special:

http://images.music123.com/products/original/Korg/425052.jpg

I have played the Korg Radius at a music store. It is much different than the software ones I've played with on the computer. It was special for me though because it was the first real analog I could use. It looked pretty promising. Once again, I want a Minimoog most.

Excellent choice!

The Korg Radias is a fantastic synth.

Checkout the demo videos on YouTube.

Use it with AbletonLive and your set.

I own a Korg Triton Le with plans for a Radias soon.

Who makes the best drum machines out there? The one I had was built in to my keyboard. I'm just kinda curious who makes them and what they're like. unsure.gif

Have you considered Ableton Live (software)?

How do you write music?

Even tho' RUSh is using less keyboards in their music these days, I am interested in what synths RUSH fans/musicians own.

And more importantly, how they use them?

It's often not what you have, but how you use it. Right???

Sooo... take a moment and share with us not just your gear list but, the creative writing process you use to make your modern music.

This forum can be a great place for us to grow as artist.

Kudos to Limeloaf for getting us started... yes.gif

Ahem, for me it is more what I have and how I dont know how to use it! laugh.gif Technically that is. I have always been a hater of Guidebooks.

I have an Triton Extreme 61keys expanded with the MOSS card. I'm not into sampling at all but I do make my own sounds. As for studio equipment I have an 12 channel Yamaha mixer, ECHO MIA soundcard and I use Cakewalk Sonar on my computer.

As we (the band Im playing in) live approx 1600 kms from each other (heck, the bassplayer lives currently in Poland!) it is difficult to get things going. The drummer is the mastermind behind all studio work, so I record only my keys at my place and stream them north via either yousendit or MSN messenger. We are all newbeginners but we learn of our previous "mistakes" and the next time we record we will have more knowledge.

Some interesting posts here...

Typically, I will write in one of 2 ways: Most of the time, I come up with a lyrical concept or a few lines and a title, and finish writing the words as a poem first, then come up with a fitting melody and write the music around that. The other way is to accidentally come up with a catchy guitar or bass lick while practicing, and building the song around that. I structure my practice time with about 10-15 minutes of scales and exercises, then practice songs I am playing with the band, then finish off with 15 minutes of aimless noodling and goofing around to see if something memorable comes about, and sometines it does.

Although I've never written music on keyboards, I use them to fill out the sounds on my songs. I don't like to spend too much money on keys so I prefer older models. The D50 is my favorite, and has been a workhorse for the Rush tribute band. I also picked up an old EMU Vintage Keys, but although the sounds are good, they are not very "editable", so you get what you get. I recently got a SH-32 and it is really cool for the price (less than $200). It's structured like a vintage analog synth, 2 LFO's into an EG and Filters, with different modulators. All easy access real time controls for knob twiddlers, and it sounds great too.

The best sounding keys I hear these days are the Virtual Synths. The guy in my original band has one, and it does it all. He recently got a Hammond B3 simulator plugin that has (among many others) a very hard and gritty B3 sound called "Hush", which as you may have guessed, sounds just like the intro to the DP classic. I will get the name and get back to you on that...

I have a 61-key Nord Electro 2. I have been trying to learn Subdivisions note for note, but the particulars of the keyboard part are difficult to discern on Signals (and ASOH, and R30) so it isn't going very well. I know generally which chords are being played, but I haven't been able to figure out EXACTLY what Geddy is playing in each section of that tune, despite repeated attempts with good headphones, and that has been very frustrating for me. I'm to the point where I'm thinking about just buying some sheet music, though I'd really rather not.

Years ago, I sold off my Yamaha SY77, Ensoniq Mirage, and Korg DW8000 as I wasn't playing live much. I bought a Yamaha EX-5 as a workstation (which I still have and use). I will be adding a Korg Triton EX very soon.

Guitars: Kramer Pace Deluxe (Amerijan) and Taylor 314CE. Various others that I don't use. I am using a Digitech 2120 for processing straight to my Roland VS880EX mixer/recorder. The only other effect I use for guitars is a vintage 70's Morley Volume/Wah.

Speakers/Amp: A pair of Mackie HR 824's.

I am currently updating my gear and will be buying the Korg Triton EX and a Roland VS2480. I just bought a Digitech Vocalist Live 2, but it is on backorder and won't see it until July or August sad.gif.

With the new gear, I should be pretty solid for home recording.
