COUNTERPARTS or TEST FOR ECHO

They both have some awesome songs, and some so-so filler, but the collective force of Animate, Stick It Out, Nobody's Hero, Leave That Thing Alone and Cold Fire destroys Test For Echo, Driven, Time and Motion and Resist...

Uh...since I don't own T4E, I'm going to have to go with Counterparts, which I actually like. smile.gif That was easy.

Counterparts has some excellent guitar riffs and i consider most of the songs hits

Test for echo ...i should listen to it more..theres a few good tunes but near the bottom of my list

...but compared to anything being released today is still amazing!

QUOTE (Greg @ May 10 2006, 04:04 PM)
Funny, I was just thinking about posting a thread about this over at CP, which is, well...you know. wink.gif

I don't know why BOTH of these albums get slagged so much. But of the two, and it's a close match, but I'd have to go with TFE. I think that TFE has such a beautiful sound to it, especially in Alex's department. Half the World is really a great song and so many others make sense lyrically and sonically...I just think it's a really great album.

Counterparts is obviously more rocking, harder, etc. And CTTC still gives me the chills. But there is something about TFE that makes it stand out above CP. I still don't understand why TFE, especially, gets so much grief from fans. If Rush fans want to give Rush grief, they should start with Hold Your Fire! tongue.gif

Both CP and TFE are good and special in their own ways...but my vote, if I HAVE to choose, would be for TFE.

Couldnt agree more. Exactly my sentiment.

Boy this short thread has been around awhile. I'm listening to Test For Echo for the first time in years now. It's much better than I remembered it but Dog Years and Totem are TERRIBLE! Even the lyrics are bad. I don't know what Neil was thinking. The guitar riffs are excellent, perhaps even better than Counterparts. Alex was playing louder than he had previously ever played...Well Stick it Out on CP was loud. Some of the keyboard is a little dated sounding, even for the time.

CP is a better album...Although some of the later half of that album does kind of vier back to the late 80's; a period I don't like.

When I first bought T4E, in the 90's, I re-shrink wrapped it and took it back to the store, I was that unsatisfied with it. I'm not sure what promoted me to do that. I loved CP back then. Now I want to buy T4E again today! (I'm listening to MP3's right now).

PS: Just heard the last song, Carve Away the Stone. It's kind of SO-SO.

Let's resurrect some old threads!

Um...CP is brilliant, but T4E has something beautiful about it. I don't know what it is, but its weaknesses are outshone by its strengths. And Carve Away The Stone is one of my top underrated Rush songs, for me the best of a very good album.

and for comedy, Dog Years has some very silly lyrics set over a very fun rock song. Reminds me a little of I Think I'm Going Bald in this respect...

Totem is brilliant if I ignore the clumsy lyrics. Not a single dud!

Then again, CP has only good songs as well...

Counterparts for sure. Test For Echo has a few songs that i like, but overall, it's probably my least favorite Rush album. The 90's was their weakest era.

T4E by a country mile. Counterparts has about 3 good songs on it and Rush's worst lyrics and several bad songs. Really, the only thing it has going for it is the sound and production quality. T4E has about 5 good/great songs and only one song that isn't very good.

Its funny, I find T4E to have the bands worst ever lyrics, and yet somehow I like it more than CP. I find CP, however, an enjoyable album, but T4E has a surreal quality to it that makes me warm to it...Dog Years and Totem are the prime offenders, as is Virtuality. However, I still like every song!

What tracks especially on CP do you find sub-par lyrically? For me Nobody's Hero, which is a good song, has to PC lyrics that verge on preachy...

Between, and out of these two, I like 220px-Rush_Test_for_Echo.jpg slightly more, than 220px-Rush_Counterparts.jpg.
