I have to disagree on some solos. Paranoid Android's solo sucks as opposed to The Gates of Delerium, especially Steve Howe's lap steel solo after the synthesizer solo of Patrick Moraz's when the song slows down before the Soon section. Rod Price's slide solo on Slow Ride was amazing, especially on the live version from Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1978. The solo to Limelight is amazing. Stargazer, I can go on.

I am really disappointed in that list. It was obvious that they tried to go with some lesser known ones, but skipped over ones (like Rush) who are frequently mentioned, but are ACTUALLY deserving. Oh, and a big miss was The White Stripes "Ball & Biscuit". That is probably the best solo from mainstream guitarists this millenium.

Just goes to show you how well the readers of guitar magazine can recognize talent. Why is it that Mr. Peter Townshend only gets 1 spot on that list, while Dimebag Darrell from Pantera gets 3 or 4? I know Dimebag is a decent guitarist, but he wouldnt be on that list so much if he hadnt gotten killed.

And does Smells Like Teen Spirit even have a guitar solo? There is a few measures where the guitar kicks in, but its just the standard riff that goes on throughout the song anyway.

There are some grerat solos in that list (and some stinkers), including some I would never have considered (but well worth it now I've been reminded of them). SOme of the Tony Iommi ones, Brian May's "Brighton Rock" etc.

Two I would add for consideration.

Michael Schenker on UFO's "Rock Bottom" and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser of Blue Oyster Cult on "Dominance and Submission"

OK - make it three - Nuno Bettencourt for Extreme's "Get The Funk Out".

Obviously people think you are a better guitar player if you are dead than an a living person who has been cautioned about viewing child pornography online?

Arrested but not charged?

Guitar solos:

Shine On You Crazy Diamond all nine parts(there are technically six solos in there. Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and segue of 6 to 7 is Stratocaster solos and part 6 is the classic slide/lap steel solo)

The Weapon(Alex's superb moment IMHO)

Brian May's guitar solo spot from Milton Keynes 1982

Love Reign O'er Me

Comfortably Numb

Stairway

Hotel California

In a Simple Rhyme

The Gates of Delirium

Slow Ride ending slide solo

Duane Allman's slide solo on Layla

All 4 of Dimebags solos that are on there are all better than 75% of all the rest that are on there. I would have said that before he died. The dood ripped, always have.

I agree. Like most lists, this one sucks. It seems like it wasn't decided by guitarists. There shouldn't be a single Kurt Cobain "solo" on there. At least Gilmour's "Comfortably Numb" is at #5, though his solo from "Hey You" is better than half the solos on that list.

Of course, Stairway To Heaven is #1.  Why is it I cant even listen to that song anymore without having to hit the next track button or change the radio station?

I'm actually proud of the fact that I've played guitar all these years and DON'T know how to play "Stairway." I never had the desire to learn it. 1022.gif

I'm also not surprised to see Page's sloppy-as-shit "Heartbreaker" solo on there.

I know it's a weak ass song but the solo for the White Lion song "Wait" is better than half these solos. IMO

Also the solos in Gary Moore's version of "shapes" is pretty bad ass.

I even like the solo from "Rock you like a Hurricane" from Scorpions although I don't really like the song.

I don't think a few of these are even good solos, let alone the top 100. The solo for "Smells like Teen Spirit" is something they would teach a beginner guitar player on the second day of lessons. I believe it's played all on one string even, well maybe 2 strings. 062802puke_prv.gif laugh.gif

Terrible list. Pedestrian at best tunes like "Hotel California" and "November Rain", in the Top 10???????

Rhapsody higher rating than Brighton Rock?? WTF?

Cinnamon Girl gets in, but Cowgirl In The Sand and Down By The River don't? Did they even listen to the whole album??

Steve Howe number 68? Fripp at 82? Is that the best they could do? Howe and Fripp are revolutionaries, and all they get is a bottom half rating.

No Rory Gallagher?????????

Guitar solos should be inventive, exciting, bringing a good song to another level, whereas on some of tracks on this list, the solos just make average songs longer.

Shame on the compilers for playing it safe.
