thestand
Wooten!!! Whoo!!! I've had the pleasure of seeing him many times. Once at his own show around here, and the rest of the times (I believe four) both opening and then guesting with Dave Matthews Band.

DoubleAgent420
Wooten and Pastorius are both amazing. I'm pretty sure Pastorius is dead now but Wooten's still around.

NeilPeartFan2112
QUOTE (barney_rebel @ Dec 29 2005, 09:03 PM) Jaco Pastorius http://www.jacopastorius.com Check'em out - let me know what you think. I don't see how Jaco Pastorius is lesser known, because in my opinion, he is the best bass player of all time. What he did on the bass, and what he did for the bass is something that will live on forever. I have many of his albums, from solo projects to when he was with Weather Report. Awesome stuff. ZYRANNIX
Check out Michael Manring. I have his Unusual Weather on the Windham Hill label, a new agey disc, and Thonk which is hard jazzy stuff with a lot of guest artists including Steve Smith. He plays fretless and gets some really good sounds out of his instrument, I urge you to check him out.
thestand
Did you change this threads name, to include the "bass driven" thing? Because one of my favorite "bass driven" bands is Death From Above 1979. He's not an amazing bassist, not even very very good, but there's such a cool groove. They combine hardcore/emo kinda stuff, which I absolutely despise, with dance. Very cool. Their most popular song is Romantic Rights, which is very fun. Qball
Pastorius is one of my favourite bassists. He introduced the electric fretless bass to jazz and music in general. Amazing technical skill combined with incredible musical imagination. Wooten, in turn, is a f*cking bass machine. I recommend this site... It's about the most acknowledged Polish bassist named Wojciech Pilichowski: http://www.pilichowski.net
thestand
Following up on Death From Above 1979 (DFA from now on, I don't want to type that much!). Here's the PureVolume account I'm sure some fan made- http://www.purevolume.com/deathfromabove1979 The last two songs, Blood on Our Hands and Black History Month are both good, but the version of Romantic Rights on there sounds much different then the studio version I have. If you want my version, tell me, and I'll send it.
thestand
Actually, I don't think I've stated- DFA1979 is only bass and drums. That's what makes their sound amazing, he gets that sound from a bass.
thestand
Hate to bump a thread that I have like the last 4 posts on already, but did anybody listen to Death From Above?

By-Tor & the Jazz Bass
Level 42 is a very bass driven band. Mark King is an excellent bassist. And I think a very underrated one.
Mental Vortex
Pastorius is a no-brainer, of course. Same with Claypool and Wooten. Had the pleasure of seeing Victor twice, once with Bela and once solo. You can check out my pictures of that solo show here: http://www.solarfederation.net/images/conc...ictorwooten.htm A nod to Percy Jones's work in Brand X. EXCELLENT stuff!
