I believe he was the last pitcher to both win and lose 20 games in the same season.

he lasted 20 years longer than his brother Joe, another knuckleballer.

"

  • On May 29, 1976, Niekro hit the only big league home run of his career (973 lifetime at bats), and it came off his brother Phil"

I bet Phil heard that story every family Thanksgiving.

I'm sorry, to hear, see, and read this. He should, and will be missed. My condolences, to his family, and friends. R.I.P., Phil.

I had the privilege of seeing Phil pitch back in the 70's. The Braves came to Cincinnati, and I had outfield seats in left-center field, just above the home run wall. I had a perfect view of Phil's knuckleball dancing every which way. :haz:

Then I got to see George Foster get a hold of one. I swear, it was still going up when it hit the third deck.....
