2020 Masters (at last)

Should be a great and unique autumnal event, low-scoring too judging by the receptiveness of the greens and lack of punitive bouncy fairways... it really was raining earlier and a lot of serious surface water had accumulated. As always, a competitive Tiger that doesn`t snap in half would be good to see, but other than that I wouldn`t mind if Bryson did something, or Jon Rahm.

I meant to have a bet on a few players as Skybet was giving 11 places but before I knew it the thing had kicked off and the 11 place deal was gone.

Three days of Cheltenham start tomorrow however so I will be in close contact with my accountants of turf!!

I`ve known a few guys over the years who holed up in a pub for the three days of Cheltenham each year, kinda like it was their Mecca. I`ve been a gambler in my day, but the Casino was my thing. I`ve been clean for a few years now ;)

The November meeting (next 3 days) is really a pointer to the main Cheltenham Festival in March. I was over in March this year and it turned out to be one of the last mass spectator events to take place before lockdown.

It is usually 4 days of madness - I bet more cash on those four days than I do in all my betting the rest of the year combined.

Hopefully these next 3 days will give me clues towards potential winners in March.

Sadly I am under no illusion that I will be attending in 2021, it will have to be TV only. It will be the first time in 10 years that I will have not attended the March festival.

That`s a shame for you, although if you escaped Cheltenham this year in good health that`s a cause for celebration. From my perspective, I don`t need another sport I have sketchy knowledge of to bet on!

Amen Corner may have more significance this year, in the figurative sense.

Taking us nicely back on thread after my off-thread ramblings!!

Paul Casey at -7 thru 17. Not bad.

Also going low so far: Simpson (-5), Matsuyama, Westwood, Oostie, and Schauffle, and some guy named Tiger (-4).

I guess I have never seen this Wolff guy tee off before: wow, what a bizarre action. He could be a major league pitcher with that herky jerky motion! Still, any way you can crush a golf ball is a good way, and he's playing in Augusta while I'm watching on my computer, so good for him.

My money is on "the field" and not the defending champ, so I'm hoping the opening round was Tiger's peak. (Nor did I bet on Chambeau, for that matter.)

I really don`t care for that action. I expect complete Hogan-esque fluidity and weight transference, not all those elbows and cogs. With that swing apex, he clearly didn`t learn in the kind of narrow, low ceilinged driving range bays that I used to practice in.

I suspect I will always want Tiger to win every tournament whilst we still have him around.

-4 is his lowest start ever at Augusta, and today was his first bogie-free opening major round since 2009. Seems his game is in good form.

He had a good look at birdie on final hole #9, too, but just missed.

Last year, his presence seemed to make a difference to a few players (I`m still trying to understand what Molinari was up to during the stretch). If Tiger`s kicking around within 2 or 3 strokes on Sunday morning, that would be great. I wonder if the field - that largely missed peak Tiger - have learnt to cope with his name on the board?

Some almost aces today, along with a couple of practice round aces. Guys are throwing darts.

Did you see John Rahm's ace, the on he skipped across the pond?

I did! Didn't Vijay do the same thing some years back?

Yep!

DeChambeau makes it on the number, 144. Or as he would call it, 10 over par.

Wasn't he supposed to destroy the course and win it running away?

That's what I heard, but it seems that the course is winning, so much so that yesterday he left one of his balls in the rough at #3.
