  1. 1. Sweet Home Alabama vs. Southern Man?

    • Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
    • Neil Young - Southern Man

Poor Skynyrd, another casualty at the hands of the beast that is over exposure. Southern Man is a peach, with a classic Neil guitar solo. Of course, you`d have very different lyrics to Sweet Home Alabama without Southern Man existing first. And they both get name-checked by the brilliant Drive By Truckers.

As a lyrical statement, "Southern Man." As a rock song I just wanna jam to and play air guitar, it's going to be "Sweet Home Alabama."

Van Zant grew up listening to Young and regularly rocked a "Tonight's the Night" t-shirt - most notably, on the cover of the band's album Street Survivors. According to Rolling Stone, he was even rumored to have been buried in it. Neil Young, too, owned a Lynyrd Skynyrd Florida Whiskey shirt, and once said, "I'd rather play 'Sweet Home Alabama' than 'Southern Man' anytime."

I agree with Neil.

Isn’t Sweet Home Alabama racist? Or is the song’s mention of George Wallace misinterpreted?

Aren’t Lynyrd Skynyrd from Florida?

Isn’t that song way, way, way better than Neil Young’s?

Yes, it is. No, it isn't. Yes, they are. Yes, it is.

To me SHA is not racist but an attempt to say southern man lumped all southerners as such.

Sadly southern man is as revelant now as it was then.

I have posted how if you listen closely after the the verse "well I heard mr young sing about her" you can hear son of a bitch whispered. It does seem there was mutual respect.

To me, skynyrd had great lyrics, thoughtful, relatable and often surprising liberal.

They sang of social justice on things going on.

Gun control on saturday night special. Strongest anti gun song ever imo
