Fordgalaxy
One of the great pitchers in baseball who played his whole career for the Cardinals, but I won't hold that against him. RIP
Derek19
I'm sorry, to hear, see, and read this. He'll be missed. My condolences, to his family, and friends. R.I.P., Bob.
Principled Man
When Bob Gibson took the mound, opposing batters became afraid....very afraid.
Principled Man
(Hank Aaron told me) 'Don't dig in against Bob Gibson, he'll knock you down. He'd knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don't stare at him, don't smile at him, don't talk to him. He doesn't like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don't run too slow, don't run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don't charge the mound, because he's a Gold Glove boxer.' I'm like, 'Damm, what about my 17-game hitting streak?' That was the night it ended. -- Dusty Baker
pjbear05
Gibson took my beloved Tigers to school during the World Series in 1968. Somehow Detroit still won. RIP, Bob. Edited October 3, 2020 by pjbear05

The consensus is that it was all Curt Flood's fault.... I remember Harry Caray, who at the time was broadcasting the Cardinals PbP, having a conniption fit on the air over Flood's misjudgment of a fly ball during game 7 that broke the Card's back. Curt Flood's Game 7 and then the following year's legal battles brought him all kinds of personal trouble.
