  1. 1. How would you rate Available Light?

    • "It's the late 80s Xanadu or 2112." - hi_water

    • "It's not metal enough." - treeduck
    • "I'd rather rub my face in the crotch of a leper than listen to it." - Fridge

    • Very good song. The best or one of the best off Presto.
    • Good tune. It's a bit of a departure from Rush but it's good.
    • It's basically okay but I don't get all that jazzed about it to be honest.
    • Below average and forgettable. I'd like to partially blame Rupert Hine for it.
    • Not good. I skip it often if not more so.
    • ((other))
  2. 2. I like Available Light more than...

One of the better songs from Presto ....... but that is not necessarily saying much!

On a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being absolute perfection and 1 being a heaping pile of dog crap, what number do you assign Available Light?

Probably a 5 to 5.5

Oh, that’s higher than I expected.

I put The Pass, Presto, and Show Don’t Tell all above Available Light but they’re all pretty close in the 7-8.5 point range.

Clunkers under 5 points would be Anagram and Hand Over Fist. But I still think later fluff like You Bet Your Life and Speed of Love are much worse.

oh dude Hand Over Fist is waaaaay better than Anagram

You say “toe-may-toe”, I say they’re both below average.

idk why that post made me laugh

“Hit you in a soft place”

I’d probably give Hand job a 3.5 and Anagram a 3.

Keep in mind that something like Natural Science would be an easy 10.

So if Natural Science is a 10, what is the highest rating on your scale?

Well, since I did say it’s a 1 to 10 scale...10.

I would like to give Bravest Face something lower than a 1 but the scale is the scale.

I like the tune, but I still think Lee sounds a bit constipated when he sings "Play of light / A photograph."

I'm wondering what people think of the lyrics. Peart was pretty good at playing with concept phrases and finding the metaphorical potential.

I prefer it when Neil's lyrics are less literal and pedantic, so I really enjoy these.

funny how people think that Available Light is Rush's Bohemian Rhapsody

That’s just you.

The restless wind

Has seen all things

In every kind of light

Rising with the full moon

To go howling through the night

The sleepless wind

Has heard all things

Between the sea and sky

In the canyons of the city

You can hear the buildings cry

Oh the wind can carry

All the voices of the sea

Oh the wind can carry

All the echoes home to me

Run with wind and weather

To the music of the sea

All four winds together

Can't bring the world to me

Chase the wind around the world

I want to look at life

In the available light

Play of light

A photograph

The way I used to be

Some half forgotten stranger

Doesn't mean that much to me

Trick of light

Moving picture

Moments caught in flight

Make the shadows darker

Or the colors shine too bright

Oh the light can carry

All the visions of the sea

Oh the light can carry

All the images to me

Run to light from shadow

Sun gives me no rest

Promise offered in the east

Broken in the west

Chase the sun around the world

I want to look at life

In the available light

All four winds together

Can't bring the world to me

Shadows hide the play of light

So much I want to see

Chase the light around the world

I want to look at life

In the available light

I'll go with the wind

I'll stand in the light

Absolutely beautiful.

A photograph only tells part of the story - it's only a picture, and something memorializing the past.

NP wants to live in the present and experience life now. And a photo can conjure negative, dark feelings and not the best memories. But the wind can bring a host of senses to you - it's the movement of the earth after all - the wind connects us.

"available light" is a term used in photography - literally refers to natural light's availability - AKA the sun. Use it to forge ahead - don't dwell on the past. Use the available light to live your life - while you're here.

So how many songs would you rate as 10 and are they all equal in your eyes?

Maybe “equal” in terms of the number value. But it’s not too hard to know the difference between Natural Science’s 10, Allman Bros Jessica’s 10, and VH Eruption’s 10 and what they all do for me, which part of the brain or heart (or both) they’re affecting.

There are quite a number of Rush songs which I’d give a 10.

Well, it is...yet there are plenty of 10s in the realm of Rush. But again, the 10 is simply a number value.

Red Barchetta would also get a 10 but I do like NatSci more as it’s more impactful to me

If Available Light is Rush's Bohemian Rhapsody then Attack Of The Clones is George Lucas' masterpiece.

If Available Light is Rush's Bohemian Rhapsody then Attack Of The Clones is George Lucas' masterpiece.

:LMAO:

I’m not sure why hi_water stops there. Why not just say, “Why does EVERYONE think Available Light is the GREATEST song of ALL TIME?!”

I mean, if you’re going to exaggerate beyond all recognition a.k.a. make crap up, then you might as well pile it on extraordinarily high. The sky’s the limit!

I actually think Available Light is a really good song, though to be fair there are other songs that I would rather rub my face in a lepers crotch than listen to. (ugh thanks for that image JB!)

Oh man! I assumed incorrectly big time! I swore you didn’t like anything except a very VERY tiny number of Rush tunes post-HYF.

As for the leper face crotch, I was trying to channel my “inner Fridge”. Your “ugh” makes me think I did a half way decent image. :hail:

Available Light is definitely not one of the best songs post HYF

Leave out Clockwork Angels and I think it makes my top ten post-HYF Rush songs pretty easily.

“Why does EVERYONE think Available Light is the WORST song ever made in the history of music?”

Sincerely,
