Alice, no contest.
Agree, especially as these guys have aged. Alice's voice has held up extremely well (saw him 2 years ago and he sounded as good as the first time I saw him in '76).

Any of you that have chosen DLR, have you seen/heard this?

Are we using "singer" in the technical sense?  If no, then it's DLR by miles.  If we are, none of them are really great "singers," IMO.
This is what I was thinking.  None of those guys have good voices.

DLR is the best front man in this group.  And his inability to sing and yet still be recognized as a great front man is all the more proof of what a great front man he was!!

exactly. DLR in his prime beat the others handily. he is up there with robert plant, roger daltry and ronnie van zandt as the greatest frontman imo.

I also think Mustaine gets a bad rap. Frankly I love his vocals.

How is it a bad rap if I and many others wholeheartedly think his vocals are awful? That makes no sense. It’s simply a preference.

Having said that, there are some great riffs and tons of talent going on in Megadeth but...yeah, the vocals.

You're entitled to you opinion, I'm not saying that you should change your preference. I'm saying I think he deserves more credit than he usually gets. Yeah he's not a traditionally great singer, but I wouldn't want anyone else singing for Megadeth, it wouldn't fit.

Of course I’m entitled to my opinion, same as you are to yours. I’m just not getting the “bad rap” bit. If someone said Geddy gets a bad rap as being a bad vocalist, I still wouldn’t get it even though I totally love most of his vocals. I think “bad rap” works if someone claimed all Rush wrote about were sci-fi and dragon themes. OR if they said Geddy was a banshee screamer of a vocalist...even though that happened in just a portion of Rush’s early career. Those would be bad raps imho.

Someone not liking a vocalist is just that - someone not liking a vocalist.

I think you and I have different ideas of what the phrase "gets a bad rap" means. That's fine, I don't think we're actually disagreeing about anything else here (aside from the fact that I like Mustaine's voice and you don't).

That’s true. What does “getting a bad rap” mean to you?

I do remember you having quite a different perspective about the words “objective” and “subjective”.

lol, I remember that. I was arguing a point based entirely on semantics and it never got off the ground.

To me getting a bad rap just means having a bad reputation in general, not being frequently criticized or insulted, though that would probably lead to a bad reputation. So in context, I think Mustaine has a bad reputation as a singer from what I've seen people write about his voice.

Megadeth is one of my favorite bands and I think his vocals work perfectly for them but even I don't think Mustaine has a good voice in any way. The bad rap he's got for his voice is well earned.

I like daves quite a bit. like you said, it works perfectly for them. i like his voice and i liked what he sang about up to youthanasia.

i really connect on all levels with peace sells, SFSGSW and rust in peace. daves vocals are great on those 3 imo

If you would've put Paul Stanley rather than Gene that would've got my vote.  Hetfield has a distinct voice and delivery so he got my vote.  Second would be Alice Cooper...

I think the implication was he just screamed or shouted his way through songs, idk for sure.

He either spoke the lyrics or skipped them all together.  Watch Unchained in that vid.  Or here's a concert:

https://www.youtube....h?v=VQgHvOvujNE

"half the time" was hyperbole, but Dave frequently bailed out live by talking rather than singing, or by skipping lines altogether.

It's interesting that DLR has so many votes after being slated on here numerous times for being a bad singer.

DLR was a killer front man and really did a lot with a little, so to speak.

The man could work a crowd like the best of them.

I saw Van Halen in 1978 and DLR instantly rose to the top of lead singers and front men.

I saw Van Halen in 2007 at MSG and I swear David must have been channeling the spirit of Freddie Mercury, because he just owned the audience that night...

...this, technically, past his prime.

I saw Van Halen last in 2012 and it was a similar experience.
