I saw Blondie open up for Elivs Costello.

After Blondie and her fukking 80 year old husband made it off the stage before the encore, The put up the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES SEAL and the genital band I mean Gerital band that I loved in the Seventies and Eighties came back on stage and played "From Russia With Love" and ripped out President.

People in the stands were heading out to their cars or like me grabbing a beer and taking a piss on Debbie Harry's fat fukking face.

Elvis mentioned a possible "Civil War" that night but he was sooo damn cool I love Elvis Costello.

Anyway, just another memory. I don't give a shite about politics, but I can't stand.

My first proper rock show was Van Halen on the OU812 tour.

Blew me away man. Mind you, I knew nothing about what was out there, but still -- it didn't matter. They crushed it. I still remember how loud it was, and how I felt the reverberations in my rib cage! f***ing LOUD.

The only live experience of Roth Van Halen I had, was the US Festival Bootleg from 83. That was their worst show in the band's history! So I was convinced that version of VH sucked! LOL.

Again, I knew nothing.

Private Life - some band Eddie was producing, opened the show. They were like a weird Heart - Guns N Roses mutant band.

iirc correctly they were paid around 1.5 million for the us festival. a record amount at the time

us fest was great. used to be on either amazon or netflix.

In the GREAT book Running With The Devil, Noel monk talks about that. They had taken a sizeable break after touring for Diver Down and recording 1984, so they were WAY off their game. I don't believe there were any rehearsals for the show. Roth had just gotten back from Brazil. Van Halen actually had a clause in their agreement stipulating that they be the highest paid act on the bill! Bowie was paid 1.5 million so they had to get just a little more than that. Amazing.

After that interview I was ready to make fun of this but there are some okay things happening here. It's a hodge podge of 80s rock styles. As you pointed out, you got your Eddie VH at the beginning, then a Ratt sounding guitar riff for the verse, Pat Benatar/Patti Smyth vocals, some Heart 80s style histrionics in the arrangement, and then, hey what the hell, Al Lifeson shows up for the first half of the solo. haha. Which is perfect for this thread. Al and Ed facing off in the same song.

Yeah they were great. It had to be a lucky score for them to get a gig like that in 1983 and be on a bill with those other metal heavy-hitters. They made the most of the opportunity. That was either right after or during their Never Surrender tour. We're lucky to have a Triumph performance in front of a crowd that big right at that moment of their career.

I don't think I've seen the Us VH performance. Will have to check it out sometime. Lol re them wanting to be the highest paid performers there. Wow, great goal to have. Not at all surprising though.
