Rush

Best: Working Man

Worst: Need Some Love

Fly By Night:

By-Tor And The Snow Dog

Rivendell

Caress Of Steel:

Bastille Day (or the No One At The Bridge section of FoL)

I Think I'm Going Bald (or Panacea from FoL)

2112:

2112

Lessons (which I love)

AFTK:

Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage

Madrigal (which I adore)

Hems:

La Villa Straniato (this has nearly overtaken The Trees for me)

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (I mean, it's just an A to 2112's A+...hard to vote against Circumstances anymore these days, it's too tight)

PeW:

Natural Science

Different Strings

MP:

YYZ

Witch Hunt (I still think an Iron Maiden cover of this would blow the original away, something about the guitar and the arrangement really seems like NotB era Maiden...with added synths and a slower tempo obviously)

Signals:

The Analog Kid

Countdown

p/g:

Between The Wheels

Red Lenses

PoW:

Marathon

Emotion Detector, I guess? There aren't lows on this album, at all, only slightly higher hills.

HYF:

Time Stand Still

High Water

Presto:

Available Light

Anagram (For Mongo)

RTB:

Roll The Bones

Heresy

CP:

Animate

The Speed Of Love

T4E:

Driven

Virtuality

VT:

Ghost Rider

Freeze maybe?

SaA:

Far Cry

Faithless

CA:

Clockwork Angels

Wish Them Well

If something has to be it, it has to be Lessons it Tears. Every track is excellent.

It seems a common theme lol. I guess I have been hearing something different for over 40 years. It would be closer to my favorite than worst. I find hilarious when people diss Something For Nothing also. I think with that one the All The World's A Stage version influences me heavily. It was really my first Rush and I wore the hell out of it before I bought any studio works... Edited by Narps

2112 is not a top 10 album for me, but it doesn't have any horrible songs. Lessons is just the most boring to me. The only song I'd say is great is A Passage To Bangkok, so it's definitely not a bad album but not one I necessarily love

This is extremely interesting. Fly By Night's title track as the worst is very surprising, Tai Shan is above than Open Secrets, The Spirit Of Radio is worst on PoW (you are part of a significant minority), The Voyage is listed as best on AFTK which means its better than Xanadu, the Title Track, and CTTH, and Virtuality is the 1st one you put for T4E (and I commend you for that!) Also, you say Sweet Miracle is a good song, which means you must like the entirety of VT (I mean, there are only about 2 on VT I don't like) but again, not many people like the whole thing.

Yeah, that's a good take. I LOVE Xanadu, its an incredible song, but Cygnus X-1 is just SO good. I had to put it above. Fly By Night is by no means a bad song, but not the best on the album. That honor goes to Anthem or By-Tor. The Spirit Of Radio is a good song, no doubt about that, but Jacob's Ladder blows it out of the water. So does Entre Nous. The Spirit Of Radio, is just overrated. AFTK the title track is also awesome. I recently gave Virtuality a good and close listen, and its a great song. (I'm a young Rush fan) and that song grabbed my attention. Vapor Trails is a damn good album, I don't understand all the dislike for it. You picked up on a lot, good job. Most people would just complain. But you had an objective look on everything.

Yeah, I just recently got the original VT on cd, and it gives me a whole different take on VT over the remix and I love the album a whole lot more. "How It Is" and "Out of The Cradle" I could skip and not regret it, but the rest of the album is a must-listen

For me, I would list my favorite, and best, and worst Rush song on each of their nineteen studio c.ds, and albums. They are:

Rush (1974)

B: Working Man

W: Take A Friend (I felt I had, and need to name one.)

Fly By Night (1975)

B: By-Tor and the Snow Dog

W: Rivendell (I like the song, but not as much as the other ones on it, though.)

Caress of Steel (1975)

B: Bastille Day (It's been close between "the Fountain of Lamneth", and "the Necromancer", too.)

W: I Think I'm Going Bald

2112 (1976)

B: A Passage to Bangkok, and or 2112

W: the Twilight Zone

A Farewell to Kings (1977)

B: Xanadu

W: Madrigal

Hemispheres (1978)

B: Cygnus X-1: Book II - Hemispheres

W: N/A

Permanent Waves (1980)

B: Jacob's Ladder

W: Different Strings (The same reason as Rush's Fly By Night.)

Moving Pictures (1981)

B: the Camera Eye

W: Limelight

Signals (1982)

B: Countdown

W: New World Man

Grace Under Pressure (1984)

B: Between the Wheels

W: Red Lenses

Power Windows (1985)

B: Marathon

W: Emotion Detector (The same reason as Rush's Fly By Night, and Permanent Waves.)

Hold Your Fire (1987)

B: Mission

W: Tai Shan

Presto (1989)

B: Available Light

W: Hand Over Fist

Roll the Bones (1991)

B: Resist

W: Dog Years

Vapor Trails (2002)

B: Nocturne

W: Peaceable Kingdom

Snakes & Arrows (2007)

B: Armor and Sword

W: Hope (I've thought the song is too short.)

Clockwork Angels (2012)

B: the Garden

W: BU2B2 (The same reason as Rush's Snakes & Arrows.)

I don't know about everyone, but as I said, I think "Available Light" is the best, or tied for the best song on "Presto" with "Show Don't Tell".

does everyone really think Available Light is the best song on Presto?

Not everyone, but many people do.

Show Don't Tell sounds like it belongs on Moving Pictures. It's the exact same vein.

Available Light is great too, and I'd put the title track Presto up there as well. I return to it a lot - it's good to hear Alex on acoustic.

Of course The Pass as well.

TBH there's very little filler on Presto (unlike the disc that followed). The reasons that fans undervalue the album: Presto didn't break any new ground. No instrumentals, no wild changes, Geddy in restrained chest voice, synths back to normal after the last couple albums, almost every song in 4/4. The only innovation was that they started using modulations (twice - Superconductor and Presto), but that's hardly groundbreaking.

Basically, Presto is solid pop-rock craftsmanship all the way through -- and it's very emotive. The older I get, the more I like their emotive music.

The album is still in my top 3:

1st place (3-way tie): Moving Pictures, 2112, and Presto

4th place: Signals

I don't know about everyone, but as I said, I think "Available Light" is the best, or tied for the best song on "Presto" with "Show Don't Tell".

It was 1989, not 1979. The songs are topnotch. That's what matters.

I don't know if it was the mix or their sound or a combination of things but the mid '80s GUP/PW songs on the CA tour sounded a little rote and dull, not anything like they did on ASOH or the bootlegs I heard from the GUP/PW tours. Alex doesn't really look all that excited during The Body Electric on the DVD
