This is good stuff and a nice tribute to Neil as well.

Things we learned, according to this guy it was Bob Ludwig's mastering that made both albums sound "thin and toppy" and Geddy definitely did the rap.

Meanwhile Ian Anderson brought a pack lunch when recording Crest of a Knave instead of using the fancy cafeteria!

We had 10 days set aside for recording the drums and we couldn’t record for eight days. Neil became very annoyed and frustrated, but he came in and rehearsed endlessly each day with a guide track. When we were up and running again, he managed to completely smash all the drum tracks for Roll the Bones in a day-and-a-half. It took Geddy by surprise as he wasn’t expecting to have to then immediately start working on his bass tracks.

What a stud.

He obviously wasn't expecting that snapshot. Geddy looks weird too, I think it's because he hasn't got his glasses on.

It's Alex. He just positioned his head weird for the photo.

Funny, for all those years Ged never wore the glasses and it didn't seem weird but once he did if you see him without them in pictures from 1990 onwards it seems strange.

I think it's because in this case he must have only just taken them off and you can see the marks on his nose and cheeks.

Possibly but I think we are just used to seeing him from Presto forward wearing them. It became so much a part of his look. It even seems odd in the Show Don't Tell video seeing him without them knowing he started wearing them in that era.

Which album do you prefer Hold Your Fire or Presto?

Hm... Tough question. I don't know that I've ever compared the two. I've compared HYF to PoW; I've compared Presto to RTB. HYF and Presto are in my mind of two separate eras yet they are back-to-back studio releases. They both have their charms and their weaknesses. I think lately though I might lean HYF ...I have no logical explanation for why exactly.

I'd go with Hold Your Fire too, but then I've always liked it better. I was pretty disappointed with Presto when it came out even though it was a return to a more upfront guitar-orientated songs. The production is very thin but there are a lot of weak songs on there as well like Red Tide, Superconductor, Scars, Hand Over Fist.

Previous albums had been produced by Peter Collins, and they were more synth and keyboard-based. Rush wanted to get away from that and focus more on guitars and open up the drum sound again. That gave it quite a different soundscape from the previous records, which felt more commercial in a sense, trying to be more relevant to the electronic side of the ‘80s. Rupert and I had a vision of how we wanted Presto to sound. We didn’t want to reference previous Rush recordings. We wanted it to feel like it was a new band creating a new sound.

Presto is a good album to listen to through a decent pair of headphones. The way I enjoy it is by fooling myself into believing it's a Geddy Lee side project.

I'd say they succeeded.

Interesting stories about working with UK and Kate Bush. I can just imagine the struggle working with the strong egos in UK.
