I actually don't know a few of these. Rocking out to Skynyrd's debut right now, possible the definitive southern rock album (probably). What's your take? Edited by Entre_Perpetuo

It's the Allman Brothers, though Lynyrd Skynyrd is my personal favorite. CCR is Southern rock?

They always have been to my ears! They sound like they're from Louisiana (even though they're from California).

Maybe rethink the Eagles and the Doobie Brothers? To me, they are more a Southern California sound . Great list of the rest!

Yeah. Points for being cautiously inclusive, though.

Same thing for Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. They’re often called a Florida band yet they’re really not just an L.A. band, but a San Fernando Valley one even more.

Even though they don’t have the sound the others do, R.E.M. and B-52s deserve mention.

Well, Duane Allman (or was it Greg?) said "saying 'Southern Rock' is just saying 'rock'" so I'm inclined to be difficult and choose Led Zeppelin, but if I'm playing along (and it's a fun game), then I'll vote for the Allman Brothers.

Very inclusive list, and with all the "Others" that have been mentioned, it's easy to see why Southern Rock = Rock and Roll, and I really want to say The Drive-by Truckers as they're my favorites on the list, but I know they wouldn't sound the way they have without the Allmans, so that's my vote.

I always despised southern rock growing up. I especially despised the Allman Bros mostly because of the people I associated them with who idolized them.

However, now that I am older :codger:, from the list you have drawn up, it would not be possible for me to choose the "greatest" as I don't think any of them fall into that category, but there are definitely many that are really good:

Molly Hatchet

Eagles

Outlaws

Doobies

Allmans

Marshall Tucker Band

Skynyrd (up to Street Survivors) has the best discography. I agree with J2112YYZ that ZZ isn't really a "southern rock" band, IMO anyways, but since they're listed they would get a very close honorable mention from me. I will say that despite their "evil commercialism" .38 Special was a solid band. Molly Hatchet's Flirtin' With Disaster and Blackfoot's Train Train are probably tied for my favorite song by any of these bands.

Geographically or by sound?

Widespread Panic is a never mentioned (on TRF) Athens, Georgia band that needs to be heard more. Their gigs always sell out yet I don’t know anyone that knows of them other than close friends

He means by sound.

I don't know much about Widespread Panic. I'm aware of the name and that they seem to have a Greatful Dead like following when it comes to their touring. I don't have any idea what they sound like.

Thanks for the clarification.

I grew up in Jax, Fl in the 70s and 80s so many of these bands could easily be heard anywhere you went. And it always seemed that you knew someone or someone that knew someone that was connected somehow to Skynyrd, Hatchet, or the Allman Brothers. Drive within city limits and it’s all but guaranteed that you’ll hear one of those southern rock Jax bands on the radio (Rock 105 specifically) within 20 minutes.

What I’ve heard from the Grateful Dead I wasn’t too excited about. I don’t think they’re bad by any means though. I haven’t been really into Widespread Panic since the 90s so I’m not sure how different they are these days. But here’s a tune from those earlier days:

To me its geographic and sound.

The sound usually being multiple guitarists

Its also very much about time. Southern rock pretty stopped being a thing by the late 80s

Widespread is a jam band

Saw them in the early 90s

I much prefer the Grateful dead over widespread and phish

jam band

The jam band classification is why I went with Skynyrd over the Allman Bros, with the latter falling more into jam band status. The Black Crowes or on the jam side of the spectrum as well, IMO.

I wouldn`t have got into Molly Hatchet or Blackfoot or probably Drive By Truckers without Skynyrd. We`re talking Skynyrd up to `77, right? Ronnie`s the only Van Zant that could write decent lyrics. Street Surviviors is one of the great records, never mind the genre.

But I listen to Molly Hatchet a lot more. Always loved Gator Country, Flirtin`..., Fall of the Peacemakers, Boogie No More. Even their records from 2000 onwards were pretty decent, even though they were still just playing the same song again and again.

DBT have their moments - Birthday Boy is one of my favourite songs.
