I once saw a mariachi band open for Foo Fighters. They were called Mariachi El Bronx. Very odd to see that at a rock show but it was completely in line with the Foo Fighters sense of humor.

I think that's funny.  They would certainly get an audience going, that's for sure.

My grandfather used to sing Cucurrucucú Paloma all the time.  Hearing it brings tears to my eyes these days, and I always request it whenever I come across a mariachi band.

It didn't.

Everyone was respectful when the band was playing but you could tell that the fans all knew it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

Our neighbors play it a lot (recordings) during their cookouts. It's cheerful to hear as it drifts over on warm nights! :ebert:

There's a chapter in Neil Peart's book 'Traveling Music: The Soundtrack to My Life and Times' (beginning around page 240) where he mentions being exposed to mariachi music.

One of the mariachi acts Peart mentions is Mariachi Cobre. A couple songs mentioned that the group perform is 'Guadalajara' and 'Granada'. The songs can be heard on the group's 1992 album here.

The second mariachi musical reference from Peart is the Frida (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which can be heard here.

Also Peart references the song 'Paloma Negra' that's on both playlists.

As well, the Gipsy Kings are mentioned too.

Spanish flamenco music is great.  There's a band, Pata Negra, that put out a fantastic flamenco-blues fusion album 20 years back.  "Blues de la Frontera" was the album.

A great cover of that tune!  That's how I play it on the ukulele.
