Yes, you should familiarize yourself with the new cast: Rey, Ben (Kylo Ren), Finn, Poe Dameron, BB-8, et al.

The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi take place about 30 years after Return of The Jedi.  The Empire has lost its stranglehold over the Galaxy, but the remaining forces form The First Order, which seeks to create a new empire and crush the Galactic Republic and Resistance once and for all.

I enjoyed The Force Awakens quite a bit.

Rogue One was really good.

The Last Jedi was a steaming pile of dog vomit.

Solo was not bad.

Here's hoping The Rise of Skywalker holds up. Teaser looks awesome - Don't f**k it up Abrams.

It was worse than that. At least a pile of dog vomit is usually easy to clean up. The mess made with The Last Jedi might not be.

So, Rey goes to the dark side? This is already better than the last movie if that's the case.

...and I still like The Last Jedi. The sequel trilogy looks like it should sit snugly between the prequels and the originals in terms of quality.

Yeah, I'll add another pea shooter to the fleet defending The Last Jedi; I liked it; my son liked it; I've even watched it again, voluntarily.

This looks cool -- but I bet you a shiny dime the Rey thing is some sort of false vision (like Luke's in the cave on Dagobah . . .)

Yeah, not a chance Disney will smash the dreams of their new fanbase of little girls by turning Rey to the Dark Side...also, I don't see that making any sense in her character arc.

I say smash them. Kids need to learn early that things may not go the way they like sometimes.

I agree, but I still doubt Disney is capable of doing that.

She has little reason to turn to the Dark Side.  She has shown virtually no desire for power, revenge, or any other vice.

I think she'll pull through!

She also has no motivation to really do anything. Why even be a Jedi. What is driving her. What are the stakes?

She is simply a "girl character" where the audience needs no reason to route for her, aside from her being a female. - Sorry to seem so shitty, but it's apparent that they didn't really flesh the character out. Rose Tico exhibited more motivation and reason for existing.

What mission is she on. What is she fighting for. What does she have to lose. Why should we care about Rey in any way? I'll add that Kylo Ren also offers nearly no backstory or character development. He just feels "pain". We have to infer just about everything else with these characters. They are archetypes - not human beings. We don't even know what happened with the Knights of Ren and Luke, and we have zero backstory work with when it comes to Rey.

The movies should have centered around Finn.

In my opinion, Rey's life has been quite similar to Luke's.  An inherently good person, young & gifted, but with no idea of who she is and who her family was, and stuck on some nasty planet with nowhere to go.  Only an attack by the Empire/First Order changed her life and sent her to other worlds, where she found purpose.  Luke experienced the same life events.

Luke and Rey were motivated to become Jedi for the same reason.  The Empire/First Order destroyed their lives and killed the ones they loved.  Luke was motivated to become better than his father (and to save him), and Rey is motivated to be better than her loser, nobody parents.  Both become committed to seeking justice - for themselves and for the Galaxy.
