[Rod in Toronto]

I saw Cinema Strangiato on Wednesday in Toronto, and spotted Terry outside the movie theater. Couldn't NOT ask him for a picture!

Hey Rod, do you remember a few years back about a month before you moved to Toronto, I said that the possibility of you meeting Geddy (somewhat by chance) is actually pretty good due to the fact that you place yourself in high chance situations? Well, this Terry Brown meeting is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about.

P.S. I know you met Geddy & Alex at the Grapes event but meeting Terry like this is pretty cool.

I do remember you saying that, man. And if meeting them at the Grapes Under Pressure event was surely a dream come true, it still amazes me how so many other chances at meeting my idols have occurred since moving here. Terry was the nicest guy ever. I gave him my business card and asked for an interview - he said he would consider it.

I wouldn't either, if I hadn't been told he was there. I left the room in a rush to use the bathroom, and as soon as I left a friend of mine said "dude, you missed Terry...he was just here a MINUTE ago!!". So I went down the stairs thinking he might still be outside, and lo and behold, he was there chatting with a friend. I let them finish their chat and asked for a photo - didn't want to be THAT rude fan who interrupts the artist to ask for a photo. The guy he was chatting with gracefully offered to take the photo.

I think it's very good you were able to see, and meet Terry Brown in person, and get a great, clear photo taken with him, Rod.  It's being at the right place, at the right time.

Terry Brown's younger brother Phil Brown is also in the music business as an audio engineer who's worked with a number of well-known musicians, including: Traffic, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Bob Marley and Talk Talk.

I look at Terry and Phil as being similar English siblings like Glyn Johns and his younger brother Andy, who's also done engineering and producing for some major classic acts. Ethan Johns (the son of Glyn) is also an engineer and producer.

I did chat very briefly with Nick R. in Nashville at the Geddy book signing.  I thought about asking him the same question but was thinking that might make him a little uncomfortable.

Judging by how good he was with them on the albums he did produce those albums would have sounded and been arranged better.

Awesome. I would have recognized him but I'm not sure I would have approached him out of sheer shyness.

I asked Ray Alder from Fates Warning about what it was like working with Terry - they did the Parallels album together. He was all compliments to him, and said "he actually produced and collaborated, and did not just sit there pressing the buttons".

I think that as the music world is evolving, guys like that - Terry Brown, Martin Birch, Roy Thomas Baker etc. - are bound to be extinct, since bands are now more prone to self producing and using apps and gadgets to record. Quite a shame, since these producers played a huge part in what made bands like Rush, Maiden, Queen etc. so great.
