FEAR INOCULUM

I respectfully disagree. The rhythm section was very supportive to the music and was interesting to listen to.

Floyd and Tool are fairly far apart on most material. Pure chops, Tool wins easily. But Floyd, as you say, has some tasty sections that often get overlooked by Gilmour's guitar work.

After posting this last night it sent me into an existential quandary...

Which do I like more, Tool or Pink Floyd?

I didn't lose any sleep over it, but I also failed to summon an answer.

I always apply the “pop” test to these questions. Floyd has gone wayyyy out there, but has also written accessible pop. Tool can’t write no pop track, unless you count Three Little Pigs by Green Jello.

That's because Tool aren't pop, and don't want to be. Duh

Yeah I get that - but it’s easy to be weird.

Floyd’s got weird in spades - and then can turnaround and drop “Another Brick in the Wall” or “Time”. Tool can’t do that - not saying it’s bad or anything, just that Floyd are better

I'm going to have to lean toward Floyd being a favorite, over Tool. It's really not a fair comparison, Tool isn't trying to be Pink Floyd and Floyd never tried to be prog metal. I just have a longer history with Floyd and like a higher percentage of their material compared to Tool. On that note, not loving the new album. Way too many repeated elements from prior albums/songs.

yea i hear a kinda Floyd influence in Tool. thing there not near as Interesting for me. I mean every song song has flickers here and there where i go....ok i feel that. but they can never sustain it for me.

oh well that's my ears i guess.

I'm like that with Floyd but I still feel one day, when I'm ready, their music will open up to me.

Both bands crossover into styles of music and bands we each respectively love.

I still don't get why I'm not madly in love with Steely Dan or Supertramp!

There's a 4 minute long (kick ass) drum solo that's mostly original for them. I can only think of Disgustipated from Undertow as being remotely like it. The rest of the songs have moments where they almost seem to achieve some... uniqueness. Production is punchy. Just a lot of repetition from Tool's prior recordings. Someone not as familiar with their catalog probably wouldn't care since they wouldn't hear it, but it's spoiling the overall experience for me.

I'm feeling that with repeat listens.

There's a disconnect with the vocals that makes the whole thing kind of meandering. Feels like Maynard didn't finish recording or something. It's aight though.

I heard it as well. Vocals sometimes come across as shoe-horned.

Here's my final thoughts. After having this album play for several days in the car, it's time to move on. This was longer than most albums that don't click with me after a few listens, so I gave it more than a fair amount of time. If it were not Tool, I would have switched to something else after just a couple listens.

Overall: 6/10 [ALL the songs drag on, at some point, for too long and could have been cut by several minutes. Maynard's angst is gone, which doesn't leave behind much worth listening to since we've been here, done that musically]

Tracks:

1. "Fear Inoculum" 10:20 -- 5/10 [whole song borrows elements from prior material, sadly it sets the bar fairly low for the songs that follow]

2. "Pneuma" 11:53 -- 6/10 [opening riff waaay too much like "Right In Two", then sounds like anything from Lateralus]

3. "Invincible" 12:44 -- 8/10 [other than the bassist using that tired flanged delay effect, this is one of the stronger tracks]

4. "Descending" 13:37 -- 6/10 [Maynard is wandery (and detached from the music at times) on this, song never solidifies/pays off]

5. "Culling Voices" 10:05 -- 6/10 [Maynard's best vocal performance hindered by shoehorning of lyrics, build-up only quasi pays off]

6. "Chocolate Chip Trip" 4:48 -- 9/10 [fun track, stands out as something unusual on what is otherwise an album of gross predictability]

7. "7empest" 15:43 -- 7/10 [7here's a lot to like about 7his song, especially 7he first 7hird... 7hen 7hey rely 7oo much on a merely fair guitarist 7o be extraordinary, and an extraordinary drummer 7o carry 7he song]*

Highs: Carey's drumming is exceptional. Overall execution of the songs is solid, even if they're drawn out and borish.

Lows: Repetition, repetition, repetition. They are clearly out of fresh ideas.

Opiate is the only album I would rank anywhere close to this low, all of their prior releases are solid 9/10 to 10/10 for me.

I felt compelled to share my thoughts. Don't know why, maybe I wished for more and feel some trust as a fan violated with the lackluster results.

* Anyone else notice the static starting at 12:45 [this is just one example] -- remind anyone of Vapor Trails and the over-compression issue? :-/ These mastering clowns really need to be put out of work.

Danny is a beast and the clear highlight of the album. Most of the songs sound kind of uninspired though. Like the guys sent Maynard some jams and he half heartedly threw some stuff on it and called it a day. There's a bunch of places that would've sounded great with some soaring Maynard vocals, but he just disappears for the rest of the song.

There's moments where I feel the band locks in and sounds great though...the ends of Pneuma and Descending are cool. 7empest is okay. One thing this album made me realize is that 10,000 Days is way better than I remembered. I went back and listened to all the old stuff and found a new appreciation for it. Lateralus is still my favorite though. This one doesn't even come close to those older albums.

If you posted this a year ago, I'd have disagreed. After FI, I'm all aboard. ;)

Before FI, 10,000 Days was my least favorite of their full length albums.

I've seen TOOL too many times in my life.

I actually saw TOOL on the side stage at the first Lollapalooza.

They were fuckinggg great but really?

I've seen TOOL open for King Crimson in Berkeley.

It was a hot fuckking mess. No beer, no water and no AC.

I've seen TOOL in Oakland on the Arena stage.

So fuckking boring.

Danny Carey's drum kit looked like a Neil Peart vintage Tama with gong on that last tour I saw.

I was blown away yet bored.

I took my ex wife.

No wonder I am divorced and single.

Too many prog shit shows.

It's life.

Enjoy the record.

Enjoy the shows.

I will NEVER pay a dime to see TOOL again.

Fukking Maynard sings with his back to the stage.

A fuckking total poser piece of junk.

Just trying to be like Jim Morrison.

Maynard is a TOOL.

Danny Carey should leave this shite redundant boring band and play drums with Geddy and Alex.

Seeing TOOL on the side stage in like fuckking 1991 was awesome.

Ever since that moment in time this band is totally overrated and boring.

I would rather watch paint dry on a white picket fence during a snow storm than watch TOOL live.

Same riff. Same drum pattern. Same stupid videos on the the big stupid screen scam.

Pay the money honey.

It's not so funny in a rich man's world.

Signed

ABTOOLBA

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You fools who love this shitty band know that TOOL backwards means "LOOT."

KEEP GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY!!!!! YOU TOOL FOOLS!!! LOL!!!!!!

I wish you’d stop sitting on the fence with your opinions.

:P

"Cum On Feel The Noize" Tony! All good! Being on the fence with TOOL is real for me. I grew up with them. I loved them. Watched them from the beginning. But now, I'm just bored with the same old sound.

Rush by the way is a horrible band. Wait, I mean Rush Rules! I mean Geddy Lee's voice sucks, I mean really Geddy has a great voice! Neil is the greatest drummer of all time, I mean the guy can't swing. He totally sucks. LOL

Hello there!

I must be crazy!!

I never log in to the Rush Forum when I’m on a concert trip!

I’m in Santa Cruz!

Saw a classic old band on the beach tonight! Papa Doo Run Run.

Beach Boys and surf music covers! Beatles and Frankie Valli too!

Anyway the TOOL phenomenon is real! I stopped off at my record store to get the cd. It sold out in ten minutes. There was a line around the store to get the cd

I was blown away!

So nice to see humans want to buy a cd!!

There is hope!!

Anyway I have Apple Music so I was able to download every TOOL alum except the ep for some reason.

On my trek to Santa Cruz I listened to Undartow.

Simply a gem.

I took many years off from this bands

It’s all fresh to me.

I was a TOOL addict.

Hell I’ve seen every tour.

I listened to half of the new album in my car.

I fukkkng love it so far.

I was wrong again.

The drumming is ridiculous.

Danny is too good to join old Geddy and Alex.

I love the production.

The riffs.

The weird effects.

The percussion.

I love my LOOT post though.

Regardless of being wrong it’s the truth.

TOOL is going to make a shitload of LOOT and they deserve it!

Glad I took time off from this band.

They are fresh to my ears!

I love this band!

I was wrong!!

Love it!!

I will never forget seeing TOOL on the side stage at Lolapalooza!

They blew my fukkking mind!!

TOOL ON LOOT LOVERS!!!

I hammered!!!
