What are you thoughts on Rush Bootlegs

All things being equal I prefer performance over sound quality but there is a point (Usually below a C- rating) where it might become a difficult listen if nothing noteworthy happened.

I agree. If the sound quality is bad then I'll probably skip on that recording, Although I'm much more lenient than the average person for sound quality because I understand how old many of these recordings are and the recording mediums.

That Caress of Steel show is no charmer either, but it's likely the only one we'll get.

Since a quality CoS show is my personal holy grail, and a CoS SOUNDBOARD that actually includes Making Memories, Fountain and Necromancer would make me harder than snorting 2,112 Viagra pills, I'm still hoping that the rumored Massey Hall recording isn't total bullshit and that someday this thing magically appears:

"Toronto, Canada - Massey Hall - 1/10/76" - Fly By Night/ Beneath, Between, Behind / Bastille Day / I Think I'm Going Bald / By-Tor And The Snow Dog / In The End / Making Memories / Anthem / The Fountain Of Lamneth I. In The Valley II. No One At The Bridge III. Bacchus Plateau IV. The Fountain (ending cut) / Lakeside Park / The Necromancer I. Into Darkness II. Under The Shadow III. Return Of The Prince / Best I Can--- / In The Mood / Working Man--- / Finding My Way--- / Drum Solo / Encore: What You're Doing

(Above taken from Ron's ROIO Guide at the DRE)

That's a lot of shows you attended. My list is honestly so small it probably wouldn't be worth showing since its only two shows!

A Rush bootleg is like cold pizza - I’ll try it if someone offers it to me but I’m not paying for it. It won’t be bad because it’s pizza but yeah, an official pizza is always better.

:blaze:

That's one of the great things about about technology - these days file sharing and distribution is so easy, one can get a massive "bootleg" collection for the price of an internet connection and an external hd.

And still I don’t really want any.

I'd give them a chance. You never know what gems you can find if you look hard enough.

All I can say is that over the last 20 years or so I’ve heard maybe a dozen+ of these bootlegs. However. none of them ever left me in awe or feeling the need to have them or dig very deeply.

I do have the ABC 1974 one which is cool but I’m not dying to load up on more. Then, if you count this as a bootleg - I’ve got some demos and interviews from the Counterparts sessions that someone gave me as a gift. Again, it’s a cool thing (mostly because it was a present) but honestly, I haven’t listened to it in years.

I DO enjoy digging up old Rush concert footage from the 70s over on YouTube though.

I do Recall seeing footage of the 2112 tour and Caress Of Steel on YouTube to view. The earliest footage available from the 70's is crazily enough the Rush tour. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the Laura Secondary School footage.

Aside form owning Rush 'N' Roulette, I have zero interest in bootlegs

How many times can you listen to the same set of songs, with varying degrees of quality and performance?

Well, you don't have to listen to every boot that's ever been out there. Listening to one from each tour is fine. That way you don't get bored with the same setlist.

That's kind of what I've done with video boots, best quality one I can find from each tour that wasn't released on a commercial DVD IF the commercial release had the ENTIRE show. If not, I have it and a boot.

Not much of that to dig up it seems.

Most of that has been released officially now save for the 8mm reels.

Laura Secord, Don Kirschner, Captiol Theater '76 Soundstage videos for Fly By Night, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Pinkpop clip, Hamilton Stadium soundcheck , Live Temples bit from Buffalo in 1980,

Have I missed any?

There's the colour clip of them playing Finding My Way circa 1977 in Beyond The Lighted Stage (JD Roberts is talking over the scene).

No idea where it's from but it would be great to see more of.

I was thinking about including that one on a technicality actually. but decided against it. I remember when that came out and some of us were wondering where the rest of it might be. I think the without any further information that the consensus was that it may have come from a news report on the band but there's been nothing definite so far to conclude it came from there or anywhere else.

Along those same lines...........does anyone know if more video than just La Villa exists from Pink Pop in '79?

Driven, are you talking about an audio of the entire Pink Pop show?

I apologize if I misunderstood what you are asking.

Lorraine: No, I mean video footage. La Villa is amazing and I would love to see the whole set from that day. Sadly I don't think anything besides La Villa and a one min. piece of the soundcheck exists on video tho.

Not of Rush but there is some footage from the rest of that festival out there somewhere.

I love bootleg shows! There's just something so awesome about the "you are there" feeling others have already mentioned. I love hearing the Fear Trilogy played, for example, and -- while it's not Rush -- the moment when "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" segues instantly into "Kashmir" is just magic. Plus, I was too young to see LZ or Pink Floyd, etc. and the live stuff is too rare from them, so it's bootlegs galore.

I have bought all the commercial stuff (maybe not every boxed set re-release) and some things -- like Led Zep IV which I bought on LP, tape, cd, and iTunes -- I own in multiple formats.

My indulging in bootleg recordings cannot AT ALL constitute taking any money from the band's pocket, as there was no product to buy instead. Besides, I don't accept the argument that it takes control of the band's musical quality out of their hands -- if the show was good enough to charge somebody a ticket price, why isn't it good enough to listen to again?

Thank you to all the intrepid tapers!

One recording I find really dreadful and so annoying I will never listen to it again, is "Plastic Guitars" from the Hamilton, Ontario show 1991 10 25. One channel is a scanner recording of Alex, the other channel is a poor audience recording. It's super unbalanced and has such an irritating sound quality to it, I find it painful to listen to. I tried to monaural-ize it and it was a marginal improvement but still blech!

Is this on the USB drive? I would love to hear it

There's this very short clip...

I heard somewhere that the full performance was recorded but whoever owns the footage isn't allowed to release it due to a agreement they signed to obtain it in the first place.

Got excited by song number 60. Was hoping it was some sort of cover or something new that I'd never heard before. Oh well.

It’s a Spinal Tap cover.

Or a plea to the crowd to stop pushing forward...

"Do you speak English...?"

Their setlist which never changed much from town to town kind of defeats the purpose of bootlegs.

Different songs, cover songs and unique jams make bootlegs awesome.

No one will ever come close to the Grateful dead bootleg legacy.

I do love rush bootlegs of course but am not a avid collector.

Roll the bootlegs on youtube is an awesome multihour mix of many tasty shows.

Passage to bangkok recommended!

As in highly....

True, but the Dead had the foresight (or not) to make that happen. Huge advantage but that style lent itself to that. They really had their own thing.

Rush had their own thing too, but it was different and maybe not quite as big as the Dead.

I like the idea of different set lists, too; do you remember when Pearl Jam released every show from a tour about 20 years ago? It was cool comparing which cities had which songs.

But Rush has always amazed me for how close to the studio versions their live versions sound, and they were always very precise about things, so they were never the sort of band to knock together a set-list during the soundcheck.

Despite the sameness, I still love the bootleg shows; it's an audio veritas experience that would be hard to match.

Yeah, Rush bootlegs are the same setlists, tour in tour out, etc. Totally agree. 299 GB of Rush audio and video saved on my HD :haz:

But you have to admit there is a great deal of variation deep in the playing of many songs. Clearly on jams like Working Man, but also the more standard numbers if you listen carefully.

Obviously, it helps to hear the differences if you have an excellent recording. Preferably a matrix or soundboard ;)

Just finished watching the June 30, 1997 video on UTube. Hard to believe it took me so long. Saw four shows on that tour, and that vid really took me back in time. A Time Machine, if you will :D

I honestly hope that one day, someone in Rush opens the vault, and some never before seen concert footage gets leaked onto the net.

When someone really needs the money, it’ll appear to happen out of nowhere. Yeah I think your hope will happen.

There won't be an Internet at that point.

I heard a really good bootleg from the Moving Picture tour. It’s called Anaheim 1981, but you can also find it under the names The Definitive Edition, and Moving Stages. It’s a complete show and the sound quality is quite good.

That's probably my absolute favourite boot. What a setlist! Supposedly recorded by this guy...

aaah the great "Mike The Mike" .. also responsible for some of my favorite Yes and Zep live recordings.

I used to be really into the whole bootleg thing... my interest waned, but admittedly it's picked up a little since Rush retired. I've only got a few Rush boots, but I love 'em. Mirrors 1992.....of course there's St Louis 1980......Detroit and Frankfurt on the Hemispheres tour....
