Top 3 romantic comedies for men

So I was watching The Girl Next Door again (for the 3rd time this month, in fact) when it got me to thinking about this oh so rare genre of romantic comedies or fairy tale like movies that are really more geared towards men then women. I thought I’d list mine and see what some of you might come with...

1. The Girl Next Door

As a forty-something male I feel a little silly watching this one over and over because it’s really a teen romcom about a high school senior that falls in love with an ex-porn star. I’ve just become rather smitten with Elisha Cuthbert in this film. I also happen to think it’s a pretty good film that has a lot of heart and much better acting then your average film of this type. That in of itself, its not good enough to want to watch more than once. Elisha Cuthbert, however, is most definitely good enough to watch more than once. Quite simply, the sexiest and most charismatic performance by an actress I’ve ever seen. I know I’m not the only one, as apparently this film has become a bit of a cult classic to men.

Elisha Cuthbert is just an absolute freakIng knockout every second she’s on the screen. I just can’t quite figure out how she didn’t become much of a star after this, as it goes back to 2004. For any red blooded heterosexual make out there that hasn’t seen this, give it a shot.. .

2. The Cooler

Similar to The Girl Next Door, it’s Kind of an under the radar movie I only saw recently. William H Macy is a lovable loser working for a casino as a bad luck charm, and the love story is an unlikely one, with the ultra hot Vegas cocktail waitress, played by Maria Bello. It’s a really sweet romance and the chemistry between the 2 feels quite authentic . Add to it, the whole Vegas and gambling vibe and it has a little bit of everything for your average guy.

3. Notting Hill

I’m not much of a Julia Roberts fan, but this is by far my favorite performance of hers. She plays an “A” list Hollywood star (a stretch for her I know) who falls in love with your average every day English book store owner bloke, played by Hugh Grant. Watching the 2 of them navigate their way through this relationship is fun, with the roller coaster ride being a sweet ride. The unlikely relationship is kind of a fantasy for men, rather than the usual one geared towards women. The performance are solid and I have to say Julia Roberts really sold me.

Hang on a minute... The Cooler is a million miles from a rom-com! Without spoiling the plot, it contains a lot of violence, someone given a deliberate heroin overdose, guns aplenty, all set in a seedy casino. Good movie with great cast, but not really in the same category as Splash.

NC17 if I remember correctly.

Have to mention Albert “west coast Woody Allen” Brooks’ movies like Modern Romance, Lost In America and Defending Your Life.

Not a big fan of the Genre but this was a great movie.

It was definitely smarter than most.

1. Foom Noon till Three (It`s a western and Charles Bronson starred in it. Those two things alone make it the most manly romantic comedy ever made.

2. Knocked up

3. Tootsie
