PermanentMovingSignals
Why was this song never played live? I think it's such a strong track and it would have been great live. They must have thought about it, but why do you think they decided against it and never tried to dig it up? JohnnyBlaze
They probably didn’t play it on that tour because they felt compelled to play the PoW singles first. In following tours it just became less likely because their catalog was expanding.
laughedatbytime
It's not that they didn't want to, it's that their lawyers warned them that the risk from 20,000 fans all running to the bathroom at the same time and someone getting trampled was too high. In the end, Neil's pocketbook concerns outweighed his misanthropy.
J2112YYZ
My guess is that they didn't ever play it because years down the road they wanted someone to create a thread on a message board discussing why it was never played.

J2112YYZ
Serious answer, it's probably what Johnny said. I'm sure they wanted to play it since the rest of the album has been done live. But once it didn't make the cut for that tour it didn't become necessary for them to try again. I wouldn't have minded if they did it but their setlists certainly weren't lacking without it.
J2112YYZ
Another thing to consider is sometimes a song might not sound right in a live setting. When recording in a studio a band can do the song in parts and make it work. Perhaps they did try to rehearse Emotion Detector but something about it wasn't right or couldn't be pulled off properly.
tangy
A good tune I prefer it over mystic rhythms
RushFanForever
The reason 'Emotion Detector' wasn't played live is due to how powerful the song is from a lyrical and musical standpoint, that it would cause a 'smoke detector' to go off.
Alien Girl
The reason Emotion Detector has never been played live is because it absolutely sucks. When we lift the covers from our feelings... Seriously?! That made the cut as the opening line?! Get the f**k off , Neil. Almost as bad as Dreams flow across the heartland... Almost. *shudder* so bad. Edited November 29, 2018 by Alien Girl
1-0-0-1-0-0-1
By coincidence I was thinking just this today. Perhaps the guitar solo? The guitar solo section is the only part of the song I like. You don't think they could have replicated it live?

J2112YYZ
The bigger issue is why was Cut To The Chase never played live? Seems like an obvious pick off CP for inclusion in at least that tours setlist. I think I read something about the solo being hard to duplicate live. Maybe I'm thinking of some other song.

Nah...for me, they were good up to and including Green, then they became increasingly dull Remember seeing them way back sometime late 80s and they were fairly decent live.
