Emotion Detector

It's not that they didn't want to, it's that their lawyers warned them that the risk from 20,000 fans all running to the bathroom at the same time and someone getting trampled was too high. In the end, Neil's pocketbook concerns outweighed his misanthropy.

My guess is that they didn't ever play it because years down the road they wanted someone to create a thread on a message board discussing why it was never played.

Hey, whatever it took...there are no bad answers here.

Serious answer, it's probably what Johnny said. I'm sure they wanted to play it since the rest of the album has been done live. But once it didn't make the cut for that tour it didn't become necessary for them to try again. I wouldn't have minded if they did it but their setlists certainly weren't lacking without it.

Another thing to consider is sometimes a song might not sound right in a live setting. When recording in a studio a band can do the song in parts and make it work. Perhaps they did try to rehearse Emotion Detector but something about it wasn't right or couldn't be pulled off properly.

The reason Emotion Detector has never been played live is because it absolutely sucks.

When we lift the covers from our feelings...

Seriously?! That made the cut as the opening line?!

Get the f**k off , Neil.

Almost as bad as Dreams flow across the heartland...

Almost.

*shudder*

so bad.

By coincidence I was thinking just this today. Perhaps the guitar solo?

The guitar solo section is the only part of the song I like. You don't think they could have replicated it live?

It's one of his better solos from that era.

Which is more annoying to you: a good solo in a bad song or a bad solo in a good song?

Definitely the former... that is just a waste whereas a bad solo will not ruin a good song.

Then I'm safe to work on your material!

The bigger issue is why was Cut To The Chase never played live? Seems like an obvious pick off CP for inclusion in at least that tours setlist. I think I read something about the solo being hard to duplicate live. Maybe I'm thinking of some other song.

I like Emotion Detector tbh but give me some R.E.M. or somethin instead.

I remember when REM were actually good....about 30 years ago......

Imo they have always been good, so much talent and wonderful music.

Mike Mills has talked to me twice now this year, such a kind and sweet guy!

Nah...for me, they were good up to and including Green, then they became increasingly dull

Remember seeing them way back sometime late 80s and they were fairly decent live.
